I have my desktop and laptop successfully sharing an internet connection. However, to this day I have not been able to get my laptop to see files on the desktop or the printer. Likewise, the desktop cannot see the laptop. My desktop does not have wireless card. Is that the reason? I read one tutorial for setting up a wireless network and it listed a PCI wireless card as an essential piece of equipment, but if it were essential would I be able to share the internet connection?

Are either running a firewall? Id turn that off first for trouble shooting
Do both computers have the same workgroup name?
My Computer > properties > computer name

Same workgroup name. Firewall currently turned off. This has become one of those I am going to make this work if it kills me type of things.

Have you shared any of your folders on the PC? eg -> Windows exploder > right click folder > properties > sharing

For purposes of getting this to work, I made a share on the whole C: drive.

No, neither computer can seem to see the other. When I click View Workgroup Computers on my desktop, I see the name of the desktop PC only. When I click View Workgroup Computers on the laptop, I get nothing.

Cable modem to Linksys broadband router (for Vonage) to NetGear wireless router to PC.

Duane, not sure if you've been to this place (in case spooky runs out of ideas), http://www.windowsnetworking.com/j_helmig/winxppro.htm , but they've been pretty helpful for me when I've had to try and troubleshoot or set up stuff.

Can you ping both computers? Also on the computer that's not showing up, make sure the "Computer Browser" service is running. (control Panel>Administrative Tools> Services)

Yes, each computer successfully pings the other and the Computer Browser service is running.

In reading another article about setting this up I read the following:

"To establish a wireless connection between a desktop PC and the wireless router, you need a wireless PCI card ($40 and up), which slides into a free slot inside the computer tower. Better yet, get a wireless USB network adapter ($70), which saves you the trouble of opening up the case."

I do not have a wireless PCI card. Do I need one to get this setup?

I assume you are using a cat5 cable for the PC without wireless to the router?
If you can ping both computers through the router, then they can obviously see each other?

Correct on the cat5. If I go to my network places, view workgroup computers, neither machine shows up on the other. The confusion for me lies in the fact that the desktop is not wireless in any way, so when I view my network connections on the desktop, the wireless network does not appear. Likewise, when viewing network connections on the laptop, the connection the desktop uses does not appear.

Im running a kind of similar setup.
Linksys wireless router > running on cable to the desktop. The laptop accesses the router wirelessly and I can access both PC's via My Network Places > Entire network > Microsoft Windows Network > Workgroup

The fact that you can ping both PC's suggests you are at that point - but just something simple is missing. <waits quietly for a network guy to turn up [sm=unsure.gif]>

I've had this same problem for years... luckily I was laid off and don't have to worry about it anymore... but at my last job we had a laptop that refused to see other machines on the network. It could use the router to get on the 'Net, get email, etc.

But never could talk to the other machines.

Well, we eventually got corporate to replace it with a new laptop. The day we were switching things over our sales guy (the one who used the laptop) noticed that the time was incorrect, by three hours. Turns out it was still set to east coast time zone (the laptop came from Montreal, we were south of Seattle).

We changed the time, and voila! Instant access.

Trouble was the replacement laptop never did see the other machines... no matter what timezone we set it to.

God bless Windows (coz nobody else will)

I remember that thread. I have seen dozens of similar situations to mine in various fora, but have not come across a solution.

A bit confused here

Why have you got 2 routers?
You dont need the wireless router if you aren't going to get wired.
And if the PC and Laptop connect via cat5 then plug them both into the linksys router.
Why not connect up like so:
Cable modem
Linksys broadband router
PC(plugeed into router)
Laptop(plugged into router)
and vica versa if you do want to go wired just use the Netgear instead of the Linksys.
Now the downside....to do it properly, you will have to set it all up again.....doesnt take long.
