networking and port help please.. - 5/1/2006 1:12:07
Wzzzzup all, I did post this here, guess I needed to be more specific with subject, or no help is available..lol New machine is XP Pro.. old machine Me I currently have them hooked up together with a cat5 cable Is there a way to share data this way, or do I need a router, serial..etc.. setup? Old machine does have internet access established, but I need to know how to get XP Pro's firewall to open ports. I did go in and add the needed ports, but still don't work. Other problem is new pc cannot read the data CD's created on old pc, and my new (1000+ pg.) website is on them. Thanks in Advance, Grizz

Is the cat5 wired as a straight through, or crossover cable? To connect 2 computers without using a router or switch, you need it to be a crossover cable. Also, both the computers need to have the same Network name, otherwise they will not be able to share data. Have you run the Network Connection Wizard? Once you can see the other computer in My Network Places, then you need to enable Sharing on each of the folders you wish to share data from. You should never permanantly enable sharing on whole drives or on the Windows folder, as that poses significant security risks. If you need something from the Windows folder, enable sharing temporarily, then disable it afterwards. Or, copy the files you need to a safer shared folder. I don't think you need to open any ports to allow XP to access the internet. On the machines we service, it just requires plugging a network cable from the computer to the router and normally internet access is immediate.

Thanks Kitka quote:
Is the cat5 wired as a straight through I am using a ethernet hooked to the ethernet connections quote:
Have you run the Network Connection Wizard Yes.. and I'll rename them the same quote:
I don't think you need to open any ports to allow XP to access the internet I have internet connection with both pc's using the ethernet setup. Everything works fine except one of the kids gaming sites. I went to the sites help section and it said if a firewall was being used some ports needed to be opened/added for things to work, and I did that, but it didn't work. Everything else does work fine though. I wouldn't even do a network if I could get CD's of new site to work, but I need access to them one way or another before old pc goes R.I.P., not really thrilled of doing a year of work over again..lol Can you tell my how/were to enable sharing, and yes I'll open it temporarily. I'll go through the wizzard again to make sure everything is named the same when I get home from work. Haven't had much time to dig into the problem with working 15hr shifts lately. Thanks again, Grizz

To transfer files first thing you need to do is buy a crossover cable. Then set pc A with ip 192.168.0.1 and pc B with ip 192.168.0.2 The subnet Mask stays the same for all machines (255.255.255.0) Also # Make sure you give each computer a unique name. # Chose a Workgroup name and use the same name on all computers.

Maybe when the network issue is working properly, the port issue will resolve itself too.. I hope. Heard enough whining from household about not being able to play at thier game site. Grizz

Thanks for the link, I already had that link. I think the old pc that I'm trying to be a part of the network has/had some issues. For example the subnet mask was different from 255.255.255.0, it said 255.255.240.0. I've change everything to match, still have internet connection with all pc's, with only one not being able to get through firewall, the game pc..kids whining..lol, still cannot share files, but all pc's can ping each other.
