Just noticed that quite a few of the experts on this site advocate for FireFox in their signatures (e.g. Kitka, Jabee, etc.)

Why FireFox? How is it superior? Why not Mac Browser or IE or dare say Netscape?

On the PC I use Firefox. On the Mac I use Camino or Safari depending on my mood - both of which are excellent!

I do most of my work on the PC and primarily use FF for that so I'll concentrate on that.

Firefox is one of a few "standard compliant" browsers - that is to say a browser that interprets the web page according to regulations laid down by the World Wide Web consortium. IE doesn't so, for my initial site building that browser would be a no-no. I always build according to the "rules" so I need to check my sites on a browser that follows the same rules.

Firefox has a nice interface plus, and this is what separates it from the other "good" browsers such as Opera is that it has endless extensions that you can add to add functionality to your browser. For instance my most used extension is the Web Developer extension which gives me all sorts of clever extras which make my life as a website designer much much easier.

I also use Adblock all the time too to cut out those pesky popups, popunders, flash animations (I can choose to see these or not) or anything else that I don't want to see.

I use IE to test my sites during the build process but that's all. I don't use it for fun while browsing.

I agree with everything said by Tailslide - plus for me tabbed browsing is a huge positive - I usually have four or five sites open at once and with tabbed browsing there aren't multiple windows open. Though tabbed browsing is coming with IE7, I wouldn't swap FF for anything else, for all the above reasons...and l like all my clever little extensions too much.

I use FF only 'cause I have to. [X(]

It is a pain to have to develop for more than 1 browser to begin with but if I can make my pages work in both IE and FF, I pretty much can cover most PC users.

I am absolutely *not* advocating any browser being better than the other (that is a very old and worn out issue) but we need to support them.

I generally take this approach; develop for FF and fix for IE.

why firefox is a two pronged question.
1. why should a developer use firefox? ans. all the reasons given.
2. Why should the average surfer use firefox? ans. Im not sure. we know that ff renders sites that proclaim a doctype according to the w3c specs of that doctype but what about loose doctype or no doctype? which bowser renders those "better"? those represent probably 90%+ of the sites on the net. the criteria for the average surfer is which displays the sites I want to see - not code, not standards

I switched to FF when all the security issues with IE came up. I had just been using it to check my designs. Once I'd got used to it, no looking back and the only other browser I would consider using is Opera.

The Web developer toobar for FF is sublime and and the Rank Quest bar, which I've only just picked up looks like it could come in very handy too.

FF has its problems, it's a bit of a memory hogger and slow on initial load but once it's in it flies. Being Open Source it also tends to get fixed/upgraded pretty fast whereas IE usually has to wait until the new release which can be months or even years.

Finally, it has a really cool logo. [:D]

I use FF because it's easier to use than IE and it doesn't suddenly change my start page to something nasty.

Amen sister. More importantly, I threatened bodily harm to my wife and kids if they didn't use Firefox. It has drastically cut down on the spyware and other nasties that I was getting before. That and explaining to the 9-year old he didn't really win a new X-Box and to please not click the popup saying he had.

Having said that, I do use Opera about 30% of the time as well. Not sure why, but for some reason it suits my eye. At work, IE my only choice which makes development a bit easier since it is also everyone else's only choice. I shudder to think how some of the intranet pages I have done may render outside IE.

I absolutly love the portable version of FF. I just stick my thumb drive in any compter and use portable FF without leaving a trail on that computer.

(Blimey you're up early Taz - let me guess, you haven't been to bed yet right?)

I'd just like to add for the 3 people on this forum who use Macs that Camino is such a lovely browser - it's made by the same people who make Firefox and you can get firefox for Mac but Camino is purpose made and just reaaaally smoooooth.

I don't know if anyone else has experienced this, but when a page won't display properly in Firefox, rather than going in to IE to look at it, Mozilla seems to display them okay.

Edit: I should clarify that, it's when the "designer" has set a fixed size for a pop-up window and IE displays all the information in the new window but Firefox doesn't. That's when I switch to Mozilla and it works okay.

I'm learning to love FF... I was an advocate for Opera (always hated IE) but Opera sometimes is a pain, needs extentions, and doesn't open everything etc. so I'm all about the clever fox... Although my favorite part of the two is the tabbing I love those silly litte tabs (crtl+T, a god send)
