DVD +- R - 5/6/2006 8:33:02
Hi there I got a lovely new machine recently which is great. It has a new toy for me - a DVD burner so I want to make a back up disc od the OS and preloaded software. It says it takes DVD-R or DVD+R. I've done a bit of research and it seems to me that there is virtually no difference in the 2 types and most machines will happily deal with either. I never realised there were different types I assumed they would be like CD-Rs. Any reasons for chosing DVD+ rather than DVD- or vice versa?

There is a difference, + is much better, - is cheaper.

I haven't seen a single piece of evidence to prove + is better/worse than - dvd media. The argument that most make says that the + version usually works better in older DVD players. You should be more concerned with the manufacturer of the media, rather than the +/- type. The manufacturer of the media makes a huge difference.

This might help you If you have a DVD video recorder that plus or minus prefix makes a difference. On mine, some video features will work and others won't depending upon that. (It's so complicated that it requires a grid to present.) It has relevance with your PC in that you may want to transfer material between the it and the TV. Another caution about DVDs and CDs. I once spent an entire afternoon trying to recover a crashed hard drive by recovering file fragments onto about 18 CDs. While making labels, I inadvertently let a piece of adhesive tape ever so briefly touch the surface of one of the CDs. For about 10 seconds I stared dumfounded as the surface touched by the tape peeled off with it.

Thanks, Quite understand about the different media manufacturers. BTW I went for TDK DVD-R's rather than an own brand but in my experience with blank CD media its a bit of trial and error, reputation and what works with your hardware. I settled on memorex CD-Rs and would never use Imation ones ever again after most ended up as desktop drinks coasters. Just like I like Belkin products because I quite like the online support - like most things I guess its what works for you and what works for your other stuff - there is no right and wrong! regards Nick
