Donkey, can you show me some examples of what you're talking about?

I can't remember the last time Google returned something completely different than what I searched for.

Examples would be appreciated.

I do come across directories and lists, but they almost always have something in common with the searched for topic.

Google is not YOUR tool. It's a for-profit business. They determine which sites to index and where they rank in that index. Nobody else determines that. This is fact. There is no need to place quotes around the SEO Industry. It is huge business even if you were unaware.

You may have to wait for specific examples I'll see what I can find that illustrates the point. One of the most frustrating examples of this sort of thing is the shopping comparison sites IMHO these are an unnecessary intervention in the process of online shopping.

I'm afraid I must disagree with you on that one. Google's profitable business only exists because people like me use it regularly. It is my tool and if I and several million others stopped using it overnight they wouldn't have a business.

OK so I don't know as much as you do about the mechanics of this process. I think the point I was making is still valid.
i.e. if I have a site with p*ss poor content that is funded by advertising and all of my visitors are arriving because of my high ranking caused solely by backlinks (and then leaving straight away) I am cheating my advertisers.

How come anyone who disagrees with you is some sort of idiot? I would hope that what is after all a genuine disagreement could be discussed in a more gentlemanly way.

You clearly don't understand the point, I am saying that all SEO is wrong because it is making the search engines come up with results that are vastly different from what they would be without SEO. For example without SEO sites would be ranked purely on their content which would give a fairer ranking system. I accept that this is an impossible dream now but don't you think it would be better (for the end user that is).

You are starting to imagine things here I don't compete in your world. I am making honest observations as an interested observer.

I do not dispute that you are better than me, probably in a whole lot of ways. Your knowledge of SEO is probably better than anyone on this forum and I am not claiming to know much about it. That was not the point I was making.

I think we should agree to differ on the fundamental point and try and remain civilised.

And before someone jumps in and deletes the thread can I say that I will not post on this subject again.

Donkey: good points but I disagree on that one. no matter what criteria SE's use, it is human nature and fundamentally important for business sites and not "wrong" to try to have their site rank as high as possible. the O is for optimizing - understanding how the SEs rank and trying to make your site optimaly conform.
