Please Be Kind - 5/10/2006 18:45:41
Hey everyone,
OK, I have been using frontpage forever and a day and never knew this site was here. I only used frontpage to make single page auction templates for my own auctions on ebay (yes, I am one of those people) I have always loved frontpage and the great features it had. What I am now realizing is I have only used frontpage at 1/10th of its potential. So I went and built a website. This is my first endeavor using the Frontpage extensions and so on. I have always just used an ftp to upload and never used frontpage to do it. Now I need frontpage to do it and having some trouble. I will ask for that help in the right area. You can see the site here: Ken Barrett Auctions Let me know what you think and what I can do to improve it. Thanks for the input,
JOHN

also...before anyone yells at me about the scrolling text...I had to add it because people do not read. The text said the same thing while stationary and people missed it and did not know there were more pictures to view in the gallery. Also, I built this site for that auction service. If you want to e-mail me my address is speedracer@metrocast.net. thanks again,
JOHN

The thing about marquee (scrolling) text.

You don't need movement to control attention. It's contrast that should so it.

Do you know why on CaminoBrowser.org your eyes instantly fix on the download links as the very first thing? It's because they contrast against the rest of the page.

Hi John,

Nice site but there are some obvious things that need some improvement.

Firstly on the opening page, the tiny little links "Home", "Contact" and "?" at the top, I had no idea what the third one was s I clicked it and ended up somewhere in the site, no idea where really. It may be a good idea to increase the size of those images and also to use the alt text to say what the links are for, where they go etc.

The link text in the blue bar ineeds some padding on top and bottom, some size consistency and a few, (the Home link) is of poor quality. They are also unevenly spaced, The text just underneath saying "Upcoming Auctions" is also of a poor quality.

Overall text size and font consistency needed, ditch the scrolling marquee and there is a huge amount of unused space at the bottom.

Past Auctions page: Although you've told people that these links will open in PDF files, it's also a good idea to tell them the approx. file size and also offer a link to download Adobe Reader. You may also want to consider duplicating these in MS Word .doc format as an alternative for those who don't want to download anything. Why are they only in PDF format though and not html like the rest of your site? Have you considered at least picking out the best auction results or most interesting and putting them on a webpage rather than PDF at least to just whet a buyer/seller's appetite?

Links page was a dead link and probably should appear last or second last on your link list anyway.

The link at the top that I still have no idea where it fits in the grand scheme of things is to a page with images on the left and text on the right. You need some padding around the text or images there as the text is currently hard up against both right and left table borders.

Nicole

Thank You for the feedback...I will make the adjustments. As far as the PDF's for past auctions, this is how they were doing them on the old site. It takes all the free time I have to keep the site up to date, I did not have time to convert them to any other file, so I just copied and pasted them from the old site, Cheating, maybe, but it works. Most of the people who go to his site are thrilled with the improvements from what he had before. trust me, you all would not have been kind at all if you ever saw that one. If a few link bars are my only problem here, then I think we are golden. People were really excited about the new site, and more importantly the Owner of the Site is absolutely floored by it, so I guess that is what matters in the end. I do want to make it very user friendly so I will act on your comments on the next update, or at least try. Thank You very much For the tips.
JOHN

I'm not so sure the marquee is a bad thing.

Although ALL web designers hate it, in context it does a job.
Based on ticker tape, it says "here is the very latest news" and I think you use it appropriately.
It might look smoother if you slow it down a little, and maybe style or border it.

Im not sure about all this though

Personally I think it's too wide. I hate sideways scrolling and unless I filled my 1024 screen with your site, I got sideways scrollers.

Just IMO.
