HELP! I have spilled my java - 5/11/2006 5:49:26
Hi all. Des has been helping me with my site. My URL's are a mess. Pages not indexing properly. Host manipulating files and folders just to keep my site up, then telling me I have placed my uploads into the wrong folders when I have no control over which folders they go into, nor have I moved any folders or files They constantly are telling me to re-upload. Now their latest suggestion is that I place the below java into my pages!
Here is the mail:

Dear William Benton, (Customer ID: 10578624)

Thank you for contacting us.

Re: Redirection: Unmasked Forwarding

Please insert this script in the <head> section.

the javascript will look something like this:

<SCRIPT language="JavaScript">

!--
if (parent.frames.length < 0) {
parent.location.href = location.href
}
-->

</SCRIPT>

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

it isnt java - s javascript; different things. you dont have or not have it on your computer. its a scrpt language that your browser knows how to interpret

Okay. I inserted the java script. It had no effect on the problem.
My pages are not indexing. My homepage URL should read: index.html. It doesn't. When you hit any of my page links from my index page, the URL doesn't change to the name of the page, it stays the same. Calling up individual pages returns error 404. Server says I must fix it.

Please advise.

Bill

Try adding the script after the </head> tag.

I am thinking of re doing this site still using Front Page but turning off the exstensions and just using ftp. My site is pretty simple. Do you have an opinion on that? It has been nearly 30 days since I launched this site and it hasn't been right yet, in spite of their claim of compatibility.

RE: HELP! I have spilled my java - 5/11/2006 17:01:57
I'm a bit puzzled.

When checking the souce with Firefox I get the menu "View this frame only" and get offered this code Meta data only...

<HTML><HEAD><META NAME="description" content=""><META NAME="keywords" content=""><TITLE></TITLE></HEAD><FRAMESET ROWS="100%,*" BORDER="0" FRAMEBORDER="0"><FRAME SRC="http://mistersongwriter.com/mistersongwriter.com files/mistersongwriter html pages/index.htm" SCROLLING="AUTO" NAME="bannerframe" NORESIZE></FRAMESET><NOFRAMES><P><DIV ALIGN="CENTER"><A HREF="http://mistersongwriter.com/mistersongwriter.com files/mistersongwriter html pages/index.htm">http://mistersongwriter.com/index.htm</A></DIV></NOFRAMES></HTML>

In the Framed source code I get the url:
http://mistersongwriter.com/mistersongwriter.com%20files/mistersongwriter%20html%20pages/index.htm

Then checking with IE6 ( :) ) I get a different source, will just post the MEta data rather than whole page of code...

What process do you use to upload the web site?
What folder are you uploading too?
What access do you have to the Web Hosting server, as in cPanel or Plesk log in etc?

RE: HELP! I have spilled my java - 5/11/2006 18:18:55
Thanks both of you. I will just try to tell this in points.
1. I noticed this also: http://mistersongwriter.com/mistersongwriter.com%20files/mistersongwriter%20html%20pages/index.htm
I called tech since I was told these %20's are errors and the se's would ignore my site.
2. The tech wrote that she had written spript so the URL would be http://www.mistersongwriter.com.
3. When she had finished that, no matter what page you would go to, the URL would remain the same.
4. Again to tech. I said this was still not right since my pages would not be indexed. They then started telling me it was my problem and I had to fix it.
5. Next brain storm from tech was to add javascript (hence my current question) I tried all suggestions and was getting errors so it has now been removed.
6. My version of Front Page is: 4.0.2.2717 1995-1999 on a PC.
7. I use the publish feature in Front Page to upload the website.
8. The upload folder is mistersongwriter.com files
9. I have a control panel that I log into to get to my web folders.

Either of you are welcome to my passwords if you care to look at the webfiles on my site. Just drop me an email at:
justsayso04@aol.com and I will send them to you.

Thanks for looking.

Bill

Hi Dan. I am packing my lunch and getting ready to go back to school now. See you at graduation! Sorry for the grade school questions. Yup some of us are still riding the "SPECIAL BUS". At 56, the light bulb goes off a little slower, but there is still time to learn. Your time is appreciated. Perhaps next time I can ask an intelligent question!

Hello again Dan and everybody. I have repaired my folder names to remove spaces and shorten them a bit with more relative names.

http://www.mistersongwriter.com now brings up 404 :)error.

However when accesing the site here:

http://www.mistersongwriter.com/mrsongwebfiles/mrsonghtmlfiles/index.htm

Everything is rosy....Or is it?

Beginning to get tired in Ohio.

Bill:)

RE: HELP! I have spilled my java - 5/12/2006 16:00:23
bill: somehow, you seem to have replicated your local file structure onto your web site. If i have the following
C:mydocuments/mywebs/mywebsite/index.html

when i upload my web site, what goes onto the server is
index.html goes into the root. the higher local folder names dont wind up there - and you dont want them to!!!
Q1: did you build your site with frontpage?
Q2did you use FP's "publish" function to upload it?
Q3 if A2 is no, what did you use?

we need to help you clean this up for the future.

Yes Dan, I did build it with Front Page, and uploaded it using front page publisher. This is my latest mail from tech.

Dear William Benton, (Customer ID: 10578624)

Thank you for contacting us.

This is because you are using a default.asp script that creates a frameset, but the URL provided for the frame does not exist. Your default.asp is as follows:
=====
<%EnableSessionState=False

host = Request.ServerVariables("HTTP_HOST")

if host = "mistersongwriter.com" or host = "www.mistersongwriter.com" then
Response.Write("<HEAD><META NAME=""description"" content=""""><META NAME=""keywords"" content=""""><TITLE></TITLE></HEAD><FRAMESET ROWS=""100%,*"" BORDER=""0"" FRAMEBORDER=""0""><FRAME SRC=""http://mistersongwriter.com/mistersongwriter.com files/mistersongwriter html pages/index.htm"" SCROLLING=""AUTO"" NAME=""bannerframe"" NORESIZE></FRAMESET><NOFRAMES>
<DIV ALIGN=""CENTER"">http://mistersongwriter.com/index.htm</DIV></NOFRAMES>")

else
response.redirect("http://tranquilhome.com/error.htm")

end if
=====

The URL "http://mistersongwriter.com/mistersongwriter.com files/mistersongwriter html pages/index.htm" does not exist.

See the following FAQ for an example default.asp:
http://faq.1and1.com/frontpage_extensions/frontpage_extensions_for_ms_hosting_packages/7.html

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

This was received before I changed my folder names so the folders are different now..
1. I changed mistersongwriter.com files, for example, to mrsongwebfiles fixing the space error. I also changed all my page names to shorter more relevent names.
It makes no sense to me that are referring me to faq's having to do with multiple domains. I assume this language exists on the server? Is so should I request they change the name of my folder?

Bill

Bill: look in your local folder... are you in fact using default.asp? If so , did you do that knowlingly or unknowingly? As a novice, an asp page with frames isnt what you want... too complex which is part of why you are having problems. as FP grows more complex and helps newcomers do things "easily", it also opens the door for them to do things accidentally.

Hi Dan. 7:30 AM here. Finally after 30 days, they have got my site up right. The techs have all been writing script from their end into the default.asp in attempts to get the site running correctly. Actually it's been more their fault than mine, though I did share in it. Anyway I know I still have work to do, like writing some nice meta tags for each page...My next project. I hope you will take a look and see if anything jumps out at you that may still be wrong. I don't know how to thank all of you for all the help. I will continue going to school.

Respectfully

Bill Benton
