That can only be good news for everyone whether disabled or not.

quote:

Despite the involvement of charities that try to raise awareness of accessibility issues, Guido Gybels, director of new technologies at the RNID, said the charter aimed to help everyone.

"We are not talking about small groups of people with specialist needs," he said.

Instead, said Mr Gybels, the charter wanted to make companies apply accessibility and usability to everything they produce - no matter who buys it or uses it.

"This is about making the experience better for every single one of your customers," he said.

Like the site says, taking account of accessibility and usability can only be of benefit to customers, and happy customers are customers that are likely to come back and buy from you again.

I think this initiatives an excellent thing - it's just what is needed, a sea change in how companies perceive their customers and provide services.

More importantly from my point of view it'll mean my mother will be able to operate her mobile phone without calling me for assistance every five minutes...

Mother: how do I get into X?
Me: go into the menu?
Mother: where's the menu?
Me: press the menu button
Mother: which one's that?
Me: Arrrrggh! I don't know, hold it up to the phone so I can see what the buttons look like...

:)

whenever I use my mobile - currently a motorola - I wish I could create my own little personalised menu system. At the moment I can't get it to connect to the internet!!:)

If the mobile makers created the right API we could download our favourite text message UI, and all the menu's where we like them. It could be like ringtone downloads, they'd make money, we'd be happy.

sigh, if only life could be that straightforward.:)

Ah yes but then we'd have nothing to moan about - and I don't know about you, but I have no idea what I'd do with all that free time!

Of course dear old Golfer's just amazed at these new fangled moving pictures and has no idea how the magic pictures get into the little box. He'd need one that says 'press this for magic pictures'. :)

No chance! That thing has it in for me and recently it's been in cahoots with the dvd player.

It's not only the hi-tech stuff that needs to be simplified, in the comparatively low tech appliance industry there is a movement to remove unnecessary bells, whistles and switches. After a series of focus groups throughout Europe our Italian suppliers took the plunge a couple of years ago. One of the comments that struck me as most appropriate from one of the London focus groups was "Why has my washing machine got 14 different programs when I only ever use 3?"

3?

I only ever use 2. If I'm not sure if it's colour-fast or might shrink it goes on "mimimum iron" (mid temp and short spin) - otherwise it goes on "cotton" - high temp and not likely to shrink. That's enough complication for me! :)

I use 1 !!!!:)

Non fast colours all the way on the quick setting. I wouldn't know what any of the other settings does.

I've got one of the Zanussi Appliance of Science Washer/Dryers. I've got 17 wash programmes, 11 drying programs and you can tweak those by pushing various buttons on the front to make it short wash, low spin, no spin, no drain, low heat, economy dry.......

I use wash programme D and auto dry.
