Bounce Rates - 5/19/2006 2:09:38
I was looking at the Google Analytics page for my site today and for once I went a bit further in depth at looking at what pages people are looking at and what they're leaving on. In relation to "Bounce rates" which if I understand correctly is the number of people leaving having only looked at the page they entered on, my stats vary greatly from something like 70% on the www.nixdesign.com.au/ page to about 4% on the templates page. I figure that this very low bounce rate on the templates page is because most people looking for templates actually click on a template once they're on that page, and by clicking on an individual template to view its details, they remain within the site. But I wondered what others consider to be a good bounce rate. Obviously 0% would be great but is most unrealistic, but what about 5%, 10%, 25%? What do you strive for with bounce rates and what things can be done to encourage people to stay within your site once they've entered? Nicole

The search engines kind of mess with these stats. With various algo changes you will often find that your page ranks for a few somewhat unrelated terms (sometimes, very unrelated). At least your site probably ranks for subjects that you know your visitors are not really interested. The wrong targeted visitor will almost always back out. The best method for determining the quality of your visitors is conversion rate. The last stat I read showed the average conversion rate across all vertical markets was between 2.3% and 2.8%.

Nicole: when mojo says conversion rate, he means sales, not peekers.....and yes, definitely advertize your money maker promnently on all pages
