question re: margin around the page - 5/22/2006 13:52:36
Hello!

I don't post much, mainly because I am still learning and don't know what to ask. That, and the search function is of course quite helpful! :)

Anyway, I am charged with writing a manual at my company and posting it on the web. It is on the intraweb and behind a firewall, so I can't post the link. I am not really a computer person but over the last 6 months or so have taught myself HTML, a smattering of Javascript, and am in the process of teaching myself CSS. I am teaching MYSELF because everyone else is still using FRAMES for everything, the only Javascript is whatever Frontpage 2003 inserts, and there is no CSS to be found.

Anyway, for CSS, I have created a template which works really nicely--- EXCEPT that I have a white space all the way around the page. I am thinking this is the "IE box hack" I keep hearing about, can someone confirm this for me?

(By the way, I have it kind of easy, ALL browsers which will ever look at this page are IE 6.x--- so I know if it works for me, it works for everyone--- BUT if it DOESN'T work for me, I am always left wondering if it is my fault or IE's. (Usually it's mine but I like having a scapegoat anyway!) :))

Anyway, here's my CSS-- anyone see anything obviously wrong?

Thank you in advance to the forum gods! :)

This may well be waaay too easy to be the solution - but you're missing a ";" on your body element in the CSS at the end of the font-family:

should be -

font-family: arial, serif;

d a v e:

you bring up a good point I was going to ask.....is there a trick to that site?

I tried initially to validate on that exact same site before posting. I can't post the URI so I tried to use the "direct input" function-- but I hit "check" and nothing happens. I tried it yesterday, this morning before posting, and again just now, nothing. I can use its companion (x)html checker, but not this one.

Is it down or am I just missing something? (again)

thanks
Andrew

I think it's because you're on a local host and behind a firewall.

Try doing it by file upload.

If that doesn't work, if you can use Firefox, there's an extension you can download called webmaster toolbar. There's a validation link on there that allows you to validate local copies of html and css.
