I hope posting this in the lounge doesn't give the hijackers free-will. [:D]

EDIT: Well I moved it. [X(]

What blogging software, if any, are OutFronters using and why?

nope- we already have it..hehe

mar0364 -> RE: What blog software and why? (5/24/2006 8:49:28)

Is this the thread where we talk about the separation of Serbia and Montenegro??

Tailslide -> RE: What blog software and why? (5/24/2006 9:35:25)

I've been using WordPress - both as a CMS and a blog (not my own as I use this place for that instead!).

It's lovely - valid code, pretty much accessible, unending quantities of add-ons, massive help community. Pretty straightforward to hack around.

Roger. This surely is a subtle tease to hijackers.

It motivates them into action.

They can't suppress their desire to get hold of a thread and twist it for their own evil means. They lust to change things. They long to be Modded, scolded and marginalised.

I wish you well with the thread.[:)]

yes..and the geoploitical ramifications thereof not to mention its impact upon the American league east and central pennant races

I moved it 'cause 4 post out of 5 being OT, it tells me the Lounge was *not* the appropriate place. [8|] [:D]

Would have thought that in your experience of 6600+ posts you saw that coming...[:D]

Getting back on topic, most blogs that I see use WordPress.

rdouglass -> RE: What blog software and why? (5/26/2006 11:38:21)

It hasn't been mentioned here but I'm leaning towards Chris A's BlogX and building on top of that.

http://www.simplegeek.com/CategoryView.aspx/BlogX

It's in .NET for all you open source folks out there. Can you give me any reason why I should be looking more at WordPress vs. BlogX other than "most people use it"?

EDIT: Actually Tailslide gave me quite a bit more than that but I was after other's reasons as well. Doesn't seem to be a lot of folks using blog software or else this thread is not very popular. [8|] [;)]

Tailslide -> RE: What blog software and why? (5/26/2006 11:46:59)

The main advantage of WP in my opinion is the sheer quantity of resources available for it due to it's popularity. It uses PHP rather than it's own tags as MT does (although that's got a big fanbase too).

I've literally just finished a WP blog today and I have to say it was actually (mostly) fun doing it.

levins -> RE: What blog software and why? (5/26/2006 13:02:35)

Someone recently told me about blogger.com From what I have been told you can create an account for free and be up in minutes. I don't know how much flexibility you have with blogger.com

http://www.blogger.com

Let me know if anyone has looked into this site.

Thanks anyways, but I'm interested in the software itself and not a place where I can post a blog.

rdouglass -> RE: What blog software and why? (5/28/2006 18:01:23)

I have decided to build my own since I didn't see it being such a difficult project and maybe I could make something new.

So my continued question in this thread is what people want to see in blog software. I'm interested in ideas like comment threads, Turin tests, admin features, RSS feeds, etc. I already have a few of my own but if anyone has any blogs going and there is something their current software doesn't do, I'd be interested in knowing that as well.

Any takers?

Also, anyone hosting on Windows (this will be an ASP product) interested in testing some blog software? Won't be ready for about 6-8 weeks.

womble -> RE: What blog software and why? (5/28/2006 19:59:04)

Until about half an hour ago when I got sick of clearing spam comments from my blog for the umpteenth time and decided to take it down, I was using Nucleus. My experiences with that particular one were that the admin panel was horrendous to fathom out and it wasn't at all easy to style it without installing multiple skins and I still never got it fully integrated with the rest of my site.

Easy to understand admin that doesn't require reading an in-depth manual from cover to cover, and the ability to easy style it would be the top two things I'd be looking for.

Oh, and if you come up with a way of annihalating spammers, let me know. [;)]

Would you mind elaborating? Are you talking about 'skins' or themes? Or do you want to hack the CSS? Or are we talking about different templates / layouts? Or all of the above. [:o] [;)]

I'm planning on integrating at least a visual Tourin Test; something like this:

http://php.webmaster-kit.com/audit.html

not bullet-proof but quite effective against bots. There will also be a feature to require authorization before a user comment if desired. And I will implement a 'flood-prevention' feature (limiting the number of posts any user can make in a given timeframe).

However, I think I may try an accesable method outlined here in addition to the visual test:

With WP you can do both the reskinning thing (hundreds of themes available) and you can fiddle with the CSS either locally and upload it via FTP or directly online in the WP admin panel. I took a simple wordpress theme and re-wrote it so that it matched the stylesheet of a site I'd done for a school and it works with no issues at all.

I know I keep hammering on about WP - I'm not on commission, honestly! It's just the only blog software that I've seriously bothered with because of the quality of the output and the availability of add-ons and support. I was tempted by TextPattern as a lot of designers like it BUT I dumped the idea in the end because I wanted something I could use for clients as both a blog and a CMS and the TextPattern interface was too complex.

Can't remember if it was TP or Moveable Type but one of them uses it's own proprietory tags which was no good as I have no intention of trying to learn something completely different when WP just uses standard PHP.

Let me know if you want to look around a WP install - I'll give you the details of one of mine (trusting soul ain't I!)

I suppose from a casual users' point of view skins or themes would be what they'd be looking for, but like Tail I like hacking around with the CSS. Slightly OT, but for one of my forums I've recently moved from using phpBB (not very user friendly to hack around with the CSS) to SMF (absolutely gorgeous generally), and there's even an option to edit both the (x)html and CSS through the admin panel (piccie attached), no ftp-ing required, and there are clear instructions available on what the main elements of the CSS are to change the main styles to develop your own basic themes. (I'm not on commission either [:D]) That's the sort of thing I'd be ideally looking for in a blog.

The mood I was in last night after clearing up, I was thinking something a little more violent [;)], but I suppose that'd do.

Hey RD

Sorry to jump on this topic so late, but I recently installed a blog for my wife. She needed a place to vent about the TV shows she watches every week. I looked around at several and settled on MyBloggie from http://www.mywebland.com/

Open source (which was a plus for me) and pretty simple to configure. It's all in php so it's cross platform. Pretty much operates off of a single page that uses other pages to process information.

The only thing about it that I don't like is that it's template based and I haven't built templates in this format before... so I have a bit of a learning curve to get the look and style customized.

Installation was a snap. First I created the MySQL database on the site, then unzipped and uploaded the files for MyBloggie. Made changes to the config.php file (with database info, passwords, etc) and then ran a setup.php script. From there it's pretty simple to use and has a lot of really cool features.

You can check it out here: http://carneyclan.net/blog/

We recently had a server issue and for whatever reason the backups were trashed... We lost several weeks worth of blog entries and format changes, I have yet to go in and configure it back the way she likes it. But this will show you what it looks like.

I recommend using version 2.1.3 beta. The changes to the admin interface are like night and day from the stable version to the beta... and as far as beta's go this one is very stable. No problems or issues with the software at all so far.

Hey bobby,

Good to see you. Nice looking blog but no comments about Kasey Kahne? (Oh yeah, that's Kerri's blog isn't it. [;)])

Thanks for the input. It's appreciated.
