Just discovered that CTP 1 of Web Designer is available here.

jaybee -> RE: Anyone else downloading Expressions? (5/24/2006 8:21:40)

Thanks for letting us know. I was supposed to get an email telling me when it was available. [:@]

[&:] Well that's a good start!

Ahhh well only another 200Mb to go. If you've got dial-up guys, forget it.

mar0364 -> RE: Anyone else downloading Expressions? (5/24/2006 8:30:08)

Yes I downloaded it. If you are a Dreamweaver EU you will have zero learning curve. It's just about the same! I rather like it so far. It is CPT1. I wonder what they will charge for it?? It is married to the dot.net 2 framework and seems intigrated with Office Apps.

This is an excerpt from a ZDnet article that explains the similarities
"FrontPage was very good in its time, four or five years ago when the Web was a very different place" says Wayne Smith, who left his role as a product manager on Macromedia's Dreamweaver and Flash to lead the Expressions Web Designer team. "Times have moved on, the Web has moved on immeasurably in the last four years and it's time to have a tool that deals with these new standards.

Well I just ran a very quick test.

Set up a new site and grabbed one of their standard templates. Changed nothing. Fired up Firefox and ran it through the validators.

Heavens to Murgatroyd it validated! Valid XHTML 1.0. The CSS had 1 error in it and a raft of warnings but I'm stunned.

A quick view of the standard templates shows much more restrained designs although there are a couple with appalling backgrounds.

I'm away manning a client's stand at an exhibition in Cardiff until Friday evening but I'll give this a solid test on a development I'm doing next week.

So far, amazingly good.

[edit] You can take a look at it here. Please remember this is literally just the empty site as it gets generated from the template. I've made no changes whatsoever, just File>New Web and then uploaded it to the server.

Nice--hard to believe that is a template from the same people that brought you the FP themes!

Just downloaded trial and installing as I type this. Looking forward to checking it out.

Tailslide -> RE: Anyone else downloading Expressions? (5/24/2006 11:01:04)

Doesn't look bad at all.

Starting to play around with it some and have to say---I really like it. I am pleasantly surprised and think I am going to try it for a client site I was about to start.

Thomas Brunt -> RE: Anyone else downloading Expressions? (5/25/2006 9:19:34)

I have been contractually obligated not to say anything about it during beta. It's not stable yet, but it's a very comfortable environment for FP users who want to work with css.

Well I admit it. I'm very impressed. It's so way above what they've churned out in the past. My only gripe is that it still produces all those darn vti_cnf files but even those seem to be less than they were, at first glance anyway.

It looks like a pretty comfortable environment for anyone. I shall work with it a bit more to see if it's something I can use regularly or whether gremlins start to crawl out of the woodwork.

mar0364 -> RE: Anyone else downloading Expressions? (5/27/2006 9:19:43)

Keep us posted. I will do the same. I've created a datasource to an mdb. Very easy. I don't see a obvious way to create a dataset to use with a grid on a page. So that needs work. I want to see how well it interacts with various type of data sources that will go along way in deciding future use for me.

jaybee -> RE: Anyone else downloading Expressions? (5/27/2006 13:10:43)

I'll leave that one to you. If I'm dealing with data I use php and MySQL and it still won't talk to those.

treetopsranch -> RE: Anyone else downloading Expressions? (5/28/2006 12:13:24)

Does it still have a Publish Web feature or do we have to FTP?

I didn't use FP's DRW and stuff as well.

So with comments like that, are all the benefits primarily the CSS stuff?

It has the publish feature like FP did, and FTP is also an option.

That and the valid markup, tidy templates, lack of bots and MS specials dumped in all over the place, correct doctypes, divs instead of tables........

Does that imply a 'seal of approval'? [8D]

I guess I should grab it as well and see for myself. Can I run it concurrently with FP, Visual Studio, Office, etc. or will it magically upgrade / disable / etc. other products.

It does the standard this isn't your default html editor do you want to make it...question, but other than that no problems. I was concerned about that as well and initially installed it on a notebook that doesn't have much else. Now have it on main computer and running FP at same time toggling back and forth to compare and contrast more.

Will probably just for grins publish one of their templates on a domain to see how that goes.

That's what I was wondering. I don't use FP for much these days (I'm a TopStyle convert), but I wouldn't want it to start messing with FP. Hmmmm, I suppose I ought to give it a go...[8|]

jaybee -> RE: Anyone else downloading Expressions? (5/29/2006 8:09:06)

I have it running alongside everything else and so far no problems.

And yes, so far it's a seal of approval. Just call me "Gobsmacked". [:D]

Spooky -> RE: Anyone else downloading Expressions? (5/29/2006 8:45:11)

Rich, I had a similar view of the data grid - it doesnt seem immediately obvious from the quick look I had.
t does seem like all traces of the asp DRW have been removed and its .net only.
Ill have to delve deeper :-)

You can use mySQL with .Net, just use the OLEDB classes in System.Data (I'm installing the CTP to see if it gives you this option, but I don't see why it wouldn't)

As for php, you can use C# instead on those nice unix boxes thanks to Novell! [:)]

If you use a SqlDataSource control then select System.Data.OleDb from the drop down under ProviderName in the properties menu.

shoky -> RE: Anyone else downloading Expressions? (5/31/2006 10:31:27)

So far I like the new Web Designer, but it's the new Graphic designer that I've been really excited about. The Vector/raster conversion is really nice and the photo stitching awesome - really too many great features to mention here. You should download it too!

mtfm -> RE: Anyone else downloading Expressions? (5/31/2006 10:58:08)

It figures it's not available in mac....but then nothing else is, either! [:(]

I have mac at home, pc at work...I'd try it if I could, looks cool!

mar0364 -> RE: Anyone else downloading Expressions? (5/31/2006 11:06:54)

Once you create the connection to the database you can drag the little connection icon onto the page next drag a grid or view onto the page and the connection will be available for the grid or view.

It does not seem like it should work that way but it does.

briesmith -> RE: Anyone else downloading Expressions? (5/31/2006 11:29:38)

Help Viewer prevents Help download?

Does downloading Help file first help with this or does the Viewer coming down afterwards corrupt it?

mar0364 -> RE: Anyone else downloading Expressions? (5/31/2006 11:58:06)

Don't bother with the help as of earlier this week when I downloaded it, it had no contents.
