Accented characters not displaying - 5/26/2006 1:30:16
In my site, I'm going to have a lot of Spanish text. For example, I might say, "Bajo construcción." Notice the accent on the last ó. On frontpagewebmaster, the accented character displays just fine. On my site, the entire character is missing. I get "Bajo construccin."

What gives?

In my meta tags, I've tried both charset=windows-1252 and charset=UTF-8. Neither works.

What to do?

Thanks,
Andrew

Hi

Which special character are you using for the o-acute? I tried ó locally and it works with ISO-8859-1 which is the Latin character set.

I'm guessing that either it's an issue with how the webpage is actually served (as opposed to what you say you want it to be served as) or possibly the font you've used doesn't have an o-acute.

Does it work in any other browsers?

I'm not sure what character set is being used. However, in the default Spanish text that the tool's author uses, accents are appearing.

For example, in the page code he has: comentó
It displays on the web page as: comentó

For example, in the page code he has: Limitar máxima tamaño a
It displays on the web page as: Limitar máxima tamaño a

For my source, I just e-mailed (Outlook) my Mexican friend my English text. She just replied to me (using Outlook) with the Spanish equivalent that contains the accents. I was just pasting the text she gave into my web page and I end up with either a missing letter or a little square box where the accented character should be.

From the examples I gave above, can you tell what I need to do to be able to do in order to diplay the accented characters?

Thanks,
Andrew

:) sorry Andrew - forgot to check my post after I wrote it (I had typed the special characters not the final result!) - not very helpful eh?

Here's the full list of special characters: http://www.webmonkey.com/webmonkey/reference/special_characters/

I tried using &\#\2\4\3\;\ (minus the backslashes) and that worked with the ISO-8859-1 charset and should work with UTF-8 I think.

The issue really is that if you've got a lot of Spanish text - it's going to be real pain for you having to add all these special characters by hand.

Thanks. This is a more complete list than the one that I have on file.

I also did a quick test and coding this way works fine. But as you say, it will be a PITA making the swap. At least I'm glad there is such a thing as find-and-replace-all.

Do you have any idea what character set the tool's author is using? I've never seen anything like it, but the server seems to display it correctly on the web pages. Although how it translates ñ into ñ I have no idea.

Thanks,
Andrew
