Site I built — Open for comments! - 5/26/2006 15:45:15
www.lapinturvapalvelut.fi

I’m really not that experienced a designer.

As I rarely reveal my work for public to see, I’m now posting a website I designed and built for a local security company. I’m dying for comments of professionals concerning the design, but I’m sorry the copy is in Finnish, so it’s only the design this time.

Both positive and negative. And please, if you notice any technical flaws (accessibility, browser issues) let me know.

A brief background about the design:

The company only had the yellow logo and the logotype ready.

I tried to make the design to strengthen the logo branding and bringing the otherwise (in my opinion) unprofessional and dull branding alive.

The client called for calmness and flexibility in colors and layout. The typeface choice for all the titles is ITC Bookman.

Very nice site. Neat, tidy, professional.

Only thing I can think of right now is that viewers with 800x600 screen resolutions see hardly any content without scrolling, especially on the opening page. Not sure how important that is though depending on who you're targeting.

Very smart. Lovely colour scheme.

Only thing I'd say is that you don't seem to have the same elastic layout on the Homepage as you do elsewhere - not sure why not?

Can't quite figure out (it's a bit late for me!) why when the elastic layout is increased in size width-wise it increases once centrally then with the next increase in font-size it increases only on the right hand side...

Not sure either, but it's due to the fact that the homepage uses almost completely different style rules as the subpages. That's because the layout is also different. The website is technically a little tightrope walking, that's why I'm looking for the feedback and reviews.

About the 800x600 and other low-resolutions issue, I thought of targeting the majority. 1024x768'ers and above would be floating in whitespace if the website was designed for, say 640x480, so I had to compromise a bit. The design and visual balance had a huge priority and technically I couldn't get it flexible enough.

That's very nice! My only reservation though would be whether the beige/sand, whatever you want to call it, goes with the bright yellow of the logo. You said you wanted to bring the branding alive, and I think you've done that very well, but I'm not convinced about those two colours.

I’m happy with the colors, and so is the client. The reason for the beige was to 1) break out of the too common business blue while still having a “relaxed” mood and 2) it was very hard to professionally work with pure 100% saturated colors (as was chosen by a competitor). Pastel colors push the bright logo to the foreground.

Ewwww!

I like your scheme - I get fed up of corporate blue sites (yes I know mine's blue but I'm sort of stuck with it given the name!).

So many clients ask for blue schemes - and I understand why given it's general psychological associations (trust etc) but it just gets soooo boring.

Viva Beige!

Many of my clothes are a brand called Blue. Their logo is a red box with the word "Blue." written in it in white.

I like yours much better than that competitor. In fact, I think theirs is downright ugly.

It need some more content.

The content isn't carved in stone yet. On the other hand, I designed to site to do well with the current content.

Yes, Finnish people are usually clean. And minimalistic (at least when it comes to clothing or standard of living).

Yes, but I've had only few real website projects.
