These are no regular “freeware” fonts. I'm talking about a real high-quality type you usually only get in commercial form.

Dieter Steffmann

This German guy is amazing. He has digitized a huge number of some really old high-quality typefaces as well as made some of his own designs, and now they’re available on the web — for free. You can use these fonts freely: there doesn’t seem to be any usage restrictions.

There also is another amazing and bit more popular German guy who’s still designing, but his typefaces are only available for private use eg. in personal blogs. Use in commercial (paid) design without buying the fonts would be against copyright laws. But be sure to also bookmark this great font library: Manfred Klein

You need Adobe Type Manager to use some of Steffmann’s fonts in Windows, namely the fonts in T1 (PostScript) format. If you don't understand anything about font formats, select TT (TrueType) or OT (OpenType).

Some of my own favorites:

Steffmann
Caslon Antique
Typographer Gotisch
Anglican Text
Olde English
Schluss-Vignetten

Klein
Münchner Fraktur (best blackletter ever)
FranKlein
Bodidota
Parma Petit
Rocky
