fhenkel -> New boot error this morning? (6/6/2006 8:44:42)

Turned on the ole XP machine today and am now getting the error attached. It appears to be related to the Name Space in XP?? Any ideas?

Possibly related is that my EZ-Armor Antivirus will not function nor will it reinstall?? I've got a note into their support.

I would think it's one of two things or possibly one thing that's caused the other thing.

1. You have a virus

2. The C:\Program_Files folder has been renamed, possibly by a virus.

As your checker is refusing to load it sounds very much like a virus. If you can get on another machine then you could download AVG onto a CD and run it through your machine from the CD, don't install it whatever you do.

Or go to trend micro http://www.trendmicro.com/en/home/us/home.htm . Then run the online home scan. It's a champ and no install (Other than one active x component ((They are safe))).

You might have to F8 to boot to safe mode for things to work. This disables SOME viraul strains from launching at startup.

Take care,

Brian

Thanks but "Been there, Done that". I went to the EZ-Armor site and ran their online scan and no problems reported. Ran PestPatrol and no problems. Ran HijackThis and ran the log, again no problem reported. I uninstalled the AntiVirus software and tried a re-install and it bombs out just saying "Problem during Install"? The "Program Files" directory is not renamed and all the software, so far, works fine. Just that blasted error message when just aboout fully booted up. This is happening after the Domain login if that sparks any ideas.

OK, just found out that the problem isn't with C:\Program but is with a file which has appeared on the Root called "Program". When looking into the file it is just asci trash. This is what was giving the Virus software a fit when trying to re-install because it saw that C:\Program file and C:\Program Files directory. Guess this is one to file away for future use.

Something like that on my PC and I don't know where it came from would leave me *very, very* suspicious of virii regardless of what any scan says. [X(]

I agree with your thought, for sure. I'm going over everything and have found that the asci trash in that file is the same type which is in the corrupted AntiVirus log files. After renaming the file the AntiVirus software, a brand new copy, installed fine and is up and working again. I've isolated the machine from my network and checked all other machines. I've also run Dependency Walker on it and it says 'No DOS or PE signature found. This file is not a valid 32-bit or 64-bit Windows module." Not finished yet.

Thanks for posting those anti-spyware programs in one of your responses Fred.

I looked up PestPatrol and downloaded it upon reading your post and can't believe how many it found even though I keep all my spyware programs up to date very regularly (Spybot Search & Destroy, Spyware Guard, Spyware Blaster).

Looks like that Optimiser might be worth the money too, only $29. have you tried it?

Nicole

Nicole, I just took early retirement back in January from a very large worldwide company called AIG. We looked at all the Spyware available and found that the most compete scan was done by PestPatrol. At that time it was a small program written by a small outfit and was later purchased by Computer Associates, which saw its potential.. It now is one of their products but AIG uses it all over the world as their Spyware software. Another thing in its favor is that RoadRunner also adopted it and the full EZ-Amor package and they give it to their customers for 'Free" for one year. Of course you have to pay for it after that year.

I've not tried nor did we look at the Optimizer. I've also resolved the finding of the file on the root. The one called "Program". It appears that when I was doing trial of a Internet Radio Reciever software, it creates a temporary Wave file with its builtin Recorder function. It is supposed to place the temp file in your Profile directory but for whatever reason it dumped the file on the root. The tempfile name is Program.wav but the extension did not get attached. That Name caused the AntiVirus software to mess up its log files as well as its Update function. I've removed the file and can duplicate what happened. Needless to say that Radio reciever is removed now.

We live and we learn.

That's been my fav as well. Enough so that it is one of the few programs of which I use a purchased version. Been using it for probably at least 2 years now.
