bbigham -> Can you really do webwork on dialup? DSL? (6/11/2006 14:50:55)

For years, I've been spoiled with very fast cable connection. I've come to rely on it for my business, which includes a great deal of internet research and even some webwork for clients.

Now, though, I'm thinking about moving into the country and getting cable will probably be an impossibility. I'll be lucky to get DSL and very well may have to rely on satellite or, who knows -- dialup???

I'm reading a lot about the various types of connections and getting a lot of facts and figures, but knowing the mbps speed doesn't help me understand the "real life" aspect of slower speeds.

Can you really do webwork (and other internet stuff like research)
if you only have DSL, satellite or even <gulp> dialup?

I remember my first modem was a 300 baud connection to Compuserve so I know what it's like to crochet while something downloads, but things have gotten better than that, haven't they?

What do those of you who live in the "boonies" do? Any tips, advice or suggestions (or even warnings) will be GREATLY appreciated.

Barbara

Buy in plenty of crocheting wool. [;)]

Barbara,

I worked that way for 5 years before moving to Nevada. It is great with the 5MB cable access that I now enjoy. To go back would be painful!

Dial up is slow, but much can be accomplished.

At certain stages, we have all had to deal with dailup (well, us 'oldies' anyhow ;-)
It would pay to have a dedicated phoneline if you can, you wouldnt want to share it with a normal household phone line.
Just be prepared to multitask whilst uploading / downloading and youll have to be more conservative about how much (or how often) you will be transfering data to a clients website.
Have a web server running locally so that all of your testing can be done there first.

Hey, I maintain 5 web sites using dial up here at TreeTops Ranch. (Yes, we are located out in the boonies) No cable, No DSL, No nottin. Well we do have hot water and indoor potties.

It can be done.

Thanks for all your replies ... It's helped quite a bit to hear your experiences, even if you all have slightly different perspectives on the challenges involved.

I suppose, in the long run, I'll have to decide whether getting out of the city and into the country are worth the sacrifice. But knowing that it CAN be done (and is being done by one of my Oregon "neighbors") is comforting.

Agree with others, it can be done however uploading can really try your patience. Another option might be a wireless card that many of the cell phone companies offer. Slides into a PCMCIA slot.

I know many people in the construction industry that use these at job sites where utilities aren't in yet. Basically if you have cell service you should be able to get out. It is not as fast as a true DSL connection but much faster than dial up.

I was on dial up for years.....
The way i see it is you don't want to hang around forever uploading a site so i used to design with this in mind. The upside, lightening fast sites - for those with cable!

good point! if its too slow to upload, it will be too slow for a dial up user to download. besides, 99.2364236423% of a web developers time is working locally building the site.

/started out with Dial-up and managed well enough

& back in them days I used to make 1 Meg + animations/GIFs for fun and upload them.
Going back to dial up would suck like no other but it was good enough back then, so it would still work now if you must.

We're not that interested. [;)]

AMysticWeb -> RE: Can you really do webwork on dialup? DSL? (6/15/2006 0:15:50)

I have been using FP and dialup since 98. Unless you have a large site with loads of images, it really doesn't take all that long.

Larry M. -> RE: Can you really do webwork on dialup? DSL? (6/15/2006 9:08:22)

We, like Don from Tree Tops Ranch and Micheal (AMysticWeb), are on dial-up which is a very small price indeed to pay for being able to enjoy the peace and quiet and privacy of country living.

The only times I've had to resort to outside help were occasioned by a change of hosts. In those situations I copied my files to CD and had them published to the new host server by a friend using his high speed connection.

TRAVELER98 - Your cell phone idea has merit in the cities but not in the country. No cell service in the country here in our area. Lots of mountains and Douglas firs block any cell signal.

Don,

Our sponsors, Tom & Bonnie Brunt, also live in the country and are (or were when I spoke to them last) using satellite. Pricey and not all that fast, but something you may want to look into.

MCD -> RE: Can you really do webwork on dialup? DSL? (6/17/2006 15:12:46)

The problem with satellite is that it downloads fast but it uploads very slow.
