Mane -> Critique please (6/13/2006 19:54:03)

http://www.leo.koppel.ca
This is my personal site. I'm thirteen years old.
I'm looking for feedback on the layout, colours, etc. I know theres way too little content
I checked it in IE and Firefox but I don't know if it works in different browsers/platforms.

Thanks

womble -> RE: Critique please (6/13/2006 20:26:24)

Hi, and welcome to OF! [:)]

You're right about too little content. [;)] It's a good start though, and valid too - always a good thing! (you'd be surprised how many people have no interest in such things)

Cololur-wise...how can I put this? Um...no, it doesn't work. That's quite a dark green, and dark colours and dark text don't make for easy reading. The contrast's much better on the nav, but when you hover over the links, with that shade of green they just fade into the background. For consistency I'd also have the same colour hover on the 'valid' links, or move the 'valid' links further away from the nav.

As far as browser testing's concerned, all of the 'major' browsers used as alternatives to IE are free - I usually test on IE (and now also the IE7 beta), Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape and Opera - a google'll find their sites where you can download them all. For different platforms/OS you're rather limited unless you know loads of people with different systems to test it out on, or use a service such as Browsercam but that's pretty expensive, particualrly just for a personal site, but they do have a 24 hour free evaluation that you could use.

Oh, and a few graphics are always nice. [;)]

I also use Vim to build my websites. Requires a little learning, but haven't come across a better editor for the job.

The website is a little dull as womble said. If you really don't want to get too much into the color thing, a plain white background and black body text is also a good choice. Or some other similar approach. Less is more.

Chainmail
I keep getting chainmail. Why do people send it on don't they have anything better to do? If you look at the adresses they sometimes send it right back to whoever sent it to them, and to themselves. Some chainmail is so stupid it's funny, but they just send it along anyways...
But I now have hundreds of emails of people who sent them on and whose friends sent them on in case I want to send spam or ads to people. I know all of the emails on some people's contact lists. I especially like it when names are included then I know who everyone is - an added bonus! I even got a few emails of some people I actually know from chainmail.
...
Anyways don't send chainmail.
I guess I'm done now...

Welcome to Outfront, you'll fit in fine.

I found an excellent site the other day, a bit like the "Google It You Moron" one that you could send a link to to people who bombard you with every single 'funny' email they get that politely explains why you don't want them sending you their entire inbox every day. I was sure I'd bookmarked it, but I can't find it anywhere...[&o]

Mane -> RE: Critique please (6/17/2006 15:54:48)

Thanks for the suggestions.
I lightened the colours and made all of the links the same like Womble suggested.
About the content though, since I'm 13 I don't really have much content to put on the site. My friends just visit it and comment for fun.

Tailslide -> RE: Critique please (6/17/2006 16:18:05)

You've done an excellent job for a first effort - I hope you're very proud of yourself!

Tiny thing I'd add is
overflow:hidden;

to your section class so that it properly "surrounds" the image (it's poking out a bit in Firefox).

I hope you and your friends enjoy your site and learn a lot from it - nice to see someone making the effort to learn these thing properly rather than just rely on Myspace!

I am glad to see some positive comments here.
Give this guy a chance 13! This site is valid! How many old farts can do that?
This site has little content but the project for school would get a++ from me.
For a teenager the understanding of how to produce valid sites and how the internet works and is evolving into net 2 is awsome.
If we have guys like this nipping at our heels - look out!
Good work my friend. Content will come. the basis is there for you to build on. How many postings do you see asking for help to make something work or make it valid?
You keep on going and polishing your skills and one day the top of the tree will be only a click away.
Good luck to you
JIM

This old fart can! [;)]

Quite correct, for a 13 year old to even care about doing it is impressive. Hang around on here Leo, you can teach some of the others a thing or two.

Here's something to go on your front page Leo.

The professional web developers who contribute to Outfront Webmaster Forum are delighted to find a young man who takes the time and trouble to ensure that his personal site is correctly developed using valid XHTML and CSS.

Leo, keep on going and polishing your skills and one day the top of the tree will be only a click away.
Good luck to you

with thanks to Jim for the last line that says it perfectly.

Stick that on there Leo and impress your friends.

I signed up on there to see what it was all about as I have clients asking me to set them up a site just like their myspace account. Have you seen what passes for css on there? Well it's got me confused.

Use correct css and it doesn't work, Leave out bits and it does. I currently have a footer half way up the page and no way can I shift it.

Jaybee
I have followed your work over the last couple of years and accept your statement. The line was in general and focused on FP 'web designers?' Being and old fart myself and an fp users since 98, i have spent an age trying to bring the concept of css to the masses even css and tables beats the traditional FP way but even now in this day and age FP users will not take on CSS - and i just find that such a shame.
On my part, i designed heavily with FP 2003 tables and css. the ability of FP to give tables and ID was half the battle toward pure css sites. Even now though, with the simplicity of FP tables and the ability to assign an id to the table id and a class to sections of text - yet still produce valid sites, FP users still want to use the FONT tag!
This i find difficult to take on board!
So i find it very refreshing to find a youngster who actually cares about the user.
As a by line, i am currently playing with EWD and yet still get folks asking me how to use the font tag and how to contain layout in a table!
And just a quick note for Leo - the GOOGLE ANALYTICS TRACKER in the page will give you info but google adsense will give you cash. So put the ads in there and you will find that not only can you produce valid site, but you can pay for your sites without dipping into your own pocket.
Again good luck to you
JIM

Woohoo! I've got a stalker! [:D][;)]

As for FP users not taking on css, we'll see what happens when the new Expressions takes over. I'll be intrigued to see how many manage to mangle the new valid code it puts out by shoving font tags all over the place.

Oh stalkers are just sooooo 'last year' Jaybee. [;)] I've had one for ages! Mind you, I don't think it counts if they tell you they're stalking you and only say nice things about you. [:D]

About Adsense - don't you have to be 18 to have an Adsense account, or have I dreampt that? [8|]

Mane -> RE: Critique please (6/18/2006 21:02:05)

You can also see my nerdy friend's site. It was made with frontpage and doesn't validate though. He does have for example a news archives page that he does manually without CGI, so you have to praise his devotion.

jaybee -> RE: Critique please (6/18/2006 21:31:24)

He's done a nice job. Now you need to teach him how to validate.

curious monkey -> RE: Critique please (6/19/2006 9:59:20)

Very cool to see a 13 yr old not obsessed w/ myspace! when I was 13 I wouldn't even have tried this. I was all about girls Football (the american kind), and skateboarding. So kudos to you my young friend... stick around here I've learned a lot, you will too.

I've tried to manipulate some of the existing css on my friends site and no worky for me. but what can you expect from a very rich guy whose site isn't valid either....

Myspace Validation

jaybee -> RE: Critique please (6/19/2006 11:36:02)

Only 103! I'm impressed.

You have to find out what css has to be badly written in order for it to work. For example colours. Put the # in and nothing, take it out and it works.

I put a table in yesterday and took it out again sharpish!

Unfortunately you're dealing with a pre made table layout that you can't get at to change, all you can do is stick more in it and the more you add the more it's nested and................. [:'(]
