Requested site review - 6/20/2006 21:34:27
Hello everyone

I have a new website and I would really appreciate it if anyone could give any suggestions or comments about how it could be improved.

It doesn't validate yet.

The appearance and functionality is OK. What it's missing though, is some interest to make it stand out from other directories. Why not add “top picks”, “most popular” or some other highlights. See Yahoo Directory.

Yep, I don't think it stands out from other directories at all.

When I navigate to a directory with 14 catagories and 67 subcatagories it makes me want to run away. It's too busy.

The Yahoo News thing at the bottom detracts.

In addition, many directories like that are simply bulletin boards for advertizers and they look just like yours. And they rarely are what I'm looking for.

Look at Google's home page. Clean and very little challenge for the eyes and brain. It's like they say, "Hello" softly, take your hand gently, give you a rum and coke and then lead you inside after you've had time to get a buzz and relax.

To have the subcatagories on the home page might be what the high brains in your business recommend, I don't know.

It's well organized, as it's obviously intended to be.

It's just that I think content before feel loses out. It's like: Make me comfortable and glad I'm there before you start your sales presentation.

Again, maybe the facts don't support that. I'm just one person.

I agree with the above comments and, please don't take this the wrong way but there are thousands of directory sites already out there (clogging up Google!) - what makes your site unique? Whatever it is, it should be an obvious difference if you see what I mean otherwise you're just another directory.

Unless you're just spamming as you haven't replied to Anders comments yet...

Hello everyone,

Thanks for all the comments. I do want this directory to stand out form most of the others. It is a work in progress as it has only been online for about 3 weeks now. I want to constantly work to improve it.

No, I am not attempting to spam anyone at all. I honestly wanted to get some feedback from others to give me ideas on how I can make it better.

...ok - good goal - now how do you intend to do that? sell me on using it. stand out how? cuter looking? more informative? more info? easier to use? you have to focus that goal statement more. what are you offering that makes your site so special?

Apologies David - we just get a lot of that here where people post links to sites then disappear!

No apology is needed, I quite understand.

Notes about some of the comments:

Google is a search engine which is different from a directory.

The reason there are many sub categories is because there are many different types of web sites. In order for sites to be listed in an organized way it is necessary to have different subcategories. dmoz, for example, has 16 main categories and hundreds of sub categories. Most every directory (including dmoz and Yahoo) show subcategories on the home page.

There is really no 'sales presentation'. Sure there are google ads at the bottom of the listings pages and two ads in a table at the right but the primary purpose of this site is not to sell anything.

I agree with the statement about the Yahoo news and so I have removed it

The listings in this directory are not simply advertisements. If you go to a search engine and type in 'dreams' for example you are presented with many many sites. Most of them aren't really that informative and a lot of them wont even have anything to do with dreams. I want to provide the best and most informative web sites on any particular subject. Basically a hand picked selection of relevant sites.

I have added 'top ten links' and 'latest ten links' that was a good idea.

What sort of content do you think might be appropriate for a directory? I was thinking of news headlines or maybe articles. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Once again I thank everyone for replying to my post. I appreciate any criticism at all - good or bad

David
