Front Page Composed Sites Get Better MSN SERP Treatment? - 6/22/2006 17:52:31
I have a site that showcases my locality as well as local businesses. Each business has a one page subdomain on the main site.

I get great search results for my site from MSN search. They alway index my pages well and give my subdomains the best search results. Do you think this has anything to do with the fact that I use FP as a composer? Put another way: Does the MS bot see the Microsoft product and get all loving about my site?

Jim,

If it's the site you have in your profile, then the opening page doesn't have this:

<meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 5.0">
<meta name="ProgId" content="FrontPage.Editor.Document">

in the <head></head> of your code so how is a search engine going to know what editor you used?

Or do you mention it lots in your content?

Nicole

Edit: Ahhh, but some of your internal pages do. I don't buy it though.

When I started this site last fall I was very eager to be picked up by the search engines (isn't everybody?)

MSN not only picked me up sooner, they also indexed every word on the site. Google took the longest and then only certain keywords were "findable".

Now whenever I include a new subdomain, MSN is still my best friend (by far). Not only does MSN give my pages the best ranking, they also index my site much more frequently. I had to wait from the end of March to the first week in June for Google to cache a new subdomain for a physical therapist page. MSN had included it in their index and updated it 3X in that period.

Don't get my wrong, I'm not complaining. If Microsoft likes me because my code says "microsoft" in it....i'll take it:)

When you look for small local business on Google (like my window cleaner customer) they seem to give the best results to portal sites like "citysearch","yp" sites like "switchboard.com" or "superpages". Of course, these are the big guys and "size does matter."

But observing all this SE behavior over the past year, it has made me use MSN in my own personal searches now instead of google. If I'm looking for a lawn mower repair guy in my area, or an acupuncturist, or whatever I go to MSN first because they seem to treat the small business sites better. I don't have the stats but my gut tells me that many smaller, less glitzy sites are composed by FP users since they aren't design wizards.

I wouldn't put it past them but the timeframe you're talking about was around the time that MSN search came out of beta, went live with a vengeance and they really started pushing the searches. Some of my sites shot up their ranks, others shot down. None of them are FrontPage based.

I think maybe you struck lucky

This comes up from time to time.

It does not help.

You state MSN loves your sites. MSN is pretty easy to game your way into the SERPs. You then mention Google has bad mojo (sorry couldn't resist :)) for your site. Google is harder to game and you really need links pointing to your site to rise in the SERPs among other things). Get some back links to your site and you will be suprised.

Take care,

Brian

I was thinking about what you said yesterday about MSN being easy to "game my way". How does one game MSN your way?

The reason I ask is that I wasn't aware I was even playing a game. I compose the site in a straightforward manner and try to plainly and clearly put in the content.

I use multi-search-engine.com to compare how I'm doing in searches. When I enter the words... dentist Cornwall NY (no quotes)... , MSN gives me first page first slot. Google and Yahoo list large sites like "finda dentist.com" "teethweb.com" "yellowpagecity.com" etc etc.

Then I enter "window cleaning" Cornwall NY--the same thing happens. MSN gives me 1st and 1st

Then I do "paint and wallpaper" Newburgh NY---the same thing with MSN.

I am no web design wiz. Those pages are for friends of mine and my web site is still more of a hobby now than a business. But you must admit that MSN gives me great results.

So what is it about these pages that makes me #1 with the Microsoft people?

Research and more research, as things change. I am an avid reader at Webmaster World and Search Engine Watch. I would suggest checking them out and...start reading :).

I am not going to hand the keys over (so to say).

I already answered a VERY basic Google question for you. If you had researched why you were having issues in Google you would have known this.

If you do not want to research the basic things I can understand as you have to prioritize your time.

Also by "game" I mean research what works and does not work. Then implement what should work. That is what I call gaming the system.

I am not trying to be rude.

Take care,

Brian

well the game analogy fits - 32 teams start the NFL season and every one wants to win the Super Bowl - only one can - so acheiving the goal of #1 is a game
