UK Maps - 6/26/2006 5:41:41
Does anyone know of a reasonably priced source for UK online maps - apart from doing them yourself. The cheapest I've found seems to be Multimap which charges £150.

I don't, but you might try streetmap.co.uk?

The Guardian's been running stories about the Ordnance Survey (and other government data) and the high prices for accessing it's data, that could be why the costs are being passed on to you

Thanks yb2 they're definitely cheaper than Multimap.

Not wishing to sound stupid here but I can't quite work out why a straight map (i.e. no logos or arrows etc) costs so much for this purpose - it's not as if they have to do anything to it - just sell a particular range of map tiles. (obviously the original software for this was expensive but still...)

I think it's the actual going out and making the map that costs so much, and then they try to recoup some of it. There's so much building work going on round here I wouldn't be surprised if they had to go out every week! :)

It's one of the reasons I usually end up drawing my own from scratch if I'm not linking through to Multimap or Googlemap.

Yeah that's what I ended up doing (drawing it myself that is).

Actually, thanks a bunch for this thread. I went to do a link to one I'd done to show you and discovered all the images were missing from the site. Logged in and the images folder had vanished! It was there last week.

If it hadn't been for this thread it would have just sat there until someone complained. Now waiting for the host to get back to me with an explanation for the missing folder.
