Embedding Video - 6/26/2006 8:11:49
We get a lot of questions on here about embedding video in web pages. I was hunting around the web for something entirely different and came across this little gem.

Hope you find it useful.

If you click on the generator you want to use, eg. Flash, it takes you to step 2

I have used a FP plugin for years when embedding flash movies into a site from a company called Jimco. They have plugins available for a variety of functions besides video and more than just flash as well....

jaybee, the code generator is very much useful and handy but in pratice the media file is not embedded but one must download the file to view/hear directly from the computer. Is there anyway my visitor of the page don't have to download the media file. Thanks

Ooops only just seen this. Ummm if you're still looking, you need to stream it. Do a search for streaming media.

This is really neat. I got it to work when i press "test media", but not once i embed the file in a page then publish that page. But I will work on it more later. I usually embed from Google Video, but this will give me a lot more freedom. Thank you!

OK, I got it! Wow, that's cool. What are the benefits of using this method, as opposed to using YouTube or GoogleVideo as host and embedding from their code?

That look like a really neat software. I may try it out, but i'm trying still to decipher the benefits of putting hosting video on my own server vs. youtube.

Also, I hear of websites where you can "submit" recently uploaded video, sort of like you can submit articles. Does anyone know of any of these? I imagine it can help rankings, even if slightly.

Where you host your video is dependent on one word - control.

Free is nice but just remember that YouTube is not a non-profit organization. You play by their rules which can change at their will like adding a commercial much like internet streams from radio stations have evolved.

Or, they disappear like Photosite. Talk to some people that are scrambling to remove their photos they uploaded.

I prefer to have control over bandwidth, server space and design functionality. .

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. Yes, I see. From here on in, i'm going to try hosting my own, now that OutFront taught me how to!

We are in the process of adding our own streaming video server to host our own video, we have installed Red 5 Flash Video Server, http://osflash.org/red5. I will let you know what we think about it once we have had a chance to mess with it...

Hi Deb,
You bring up an interesting question about where and how to use video for the best effect. From a business point of view I believe video has a much broader use then lead generation, or cute little nifty entertainment snippets to amuse us. You Tube to me is like casting a big net into the ocean and when you pull the net back into the boat, some are too large, small etc. It is at this time if you have a video strategy to use a higher quality platform that you have more control over and deliver your content via an autoresponder so that video is integrated into business processes. I use a service called Maxcast. It isn't free but very affordable. The technology is provided by the same company that provides streaming video services to Disney and it has a number of advantages over YouTube; 1) stream any length video at DVD quality without pausing 2) integrated PPV component 3) The ability to move any size file between accounts in an instant. Here's a cpl of links if you want to check it out. I always recommend this to new customers if they want to use technology to reach out to prospects as a way of establishing trust earlier in the process, extend lifetime customer value and monitize their expertise using PPV and customers so far have been very excited about having their own PPV broadcast capability. They also like the fact that they don't have to host the video.

1. Spin: A Full Length Documentary about Politicians
2. Download Spin
3. PPV example from one of my customers

This gem of an article is great, JB.
But, it doesn't generate a "thumbnail" like Google Video or Youtube.
Does anyone know how I can do this, so that the image appears right where the video will play?
