Just installed a Netgear router to work with Windows xp and my server , AOL. Wireless connection works fine but now I find I can't upload to my web space using the FrontPage web publishing wizard.Have tried going direct via FTP to my web space and that works ok - but far too time consuming!!!

On advice, I have disabled my PC firewall and also changed the security setting on the router (via online product help). When I try to upload I get an error message 550 saying I cant write to that directory also on the file screen it does not show the content of my directory in the right pane as it previously did.

Any suggestions?

Have considered just re-connecting to my BT Voyager modem to see if that resolves the problem pro temp but can I then just reconnect the router when I'm finished and is this a suitable option???

The firewall is open for all outgoing originated traffic on netgear routers. Using FTP on a site with FP extensions breaks those extensions, so you might need to get them re-applied.

If you uploaded to your web using FTP then your FP extensions are probably now corrupted/broke. You will need to ask your host server to re-install them.

Sorry, think I might have confused you all (and me!!) when I say I uploaded, I went direct via AOL into my FTP space, is this the same??? I didn't use a third party FTP and only did one picture just to see if I could, if you see what I mean !

Basically, if your computers inside your network start chatting away to the outside world then the firewall doesn't stop them - it only stops stuff going in, not out. That would make it unlikely (but not improbable) that the problem isn't related to the router but is actually a problem with the site.

The 550 error message is permissions related, and this would also indicate it's not the router. You could reconnect your old modem and see if that changes things, it won't "break" the netgear setup and you can just swap them over when you're done.

Then get on to the web hosts to have a quick look at your site permissions.

Every AOL member has an FTP space which they can access direct once they have logged in.

YB2 - that's my WORST fear !! I'm just hoping its the router and nothing more serious.My site isn't hosted so if its not a router problem then it has to be down to Front Page I suppose although I have'nt changed anyhthging, only added the router.

Try switching them over then, I don't think it will be FP extensions at all then. In FP you can tick a box to use Passive FTP. That works better across routers than Active FTP (the default).

OK, switched over and still no joy!!!!!!! Does that mean that for some reason my Front Page has developed a fault?

Its obviously not finding the directory (have switched to other web pages and same result - right box of the web publishing wizard just contains the following folders
bin
dev
etc
sbin
and a few more but no files from my web page.

Any suggestions

sorry, not really. It sounds like something to do with the space rather than the router or FP. Perhaps someone else has an idea?
