How do you remove Default Meta Tags? - 6/27/2006 14:22:58
When I publish a new blank page there are default
keyword, title and description tags that are very outdated that are applied to my new page.

What generates these and how do I change or remove them?

I went to Normal.htm and they were not there...

Here is a program that will remove the meta tags when the page is saved, scroll down til you see the section NO FRONTPAGE META

http://www.jimcosoftware.com/addins.aspx

Haven't used it myself so I can't say if it's any good. It will remove icons that are next to your pages in your folder list.

Thanks...

It's for FP2002 and I have tried that.

It still generates the Tags.

I can't even find where to edit them.

In FrontPage you can click on File and Properties to edit the META tags but it will only be for that particular page as I'm sure your looking for something to be default for all pages

Each page's custom listing is blank.
I went to custom and deleted them and I checked the HTML and deleted there also.

I thought the Normal.htm page carried the default page info for new pages, but when I made a new blank page it still shows the tags.

Have you tried saving a page without the excess tags as a FP Template and using that for your pages?

I think this should work. I mean honestly the only thing they really do is let people know you used FrontPage. They don't hurt your ranking in search engines.

I apologize as I do not have FP in front of me.

This can be controlled by editing the reference template.

I am going from a two year old memory (god help you). The file name in question is Normal.htm. I believe it is located at:

Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\1033\Pages11\normal.tem\normal.htm

If not search your hard drive for normal.htm.

Open the page like any other page in FP, make your changes and save.

Take care,

Brian

Brian is spot on with the location of the normal.htm - after all these years too :)

Bear in mind though that if you use a theme or a template pages will revert to the original metatags etc. This article explains the steps you need to take to alter defaults in FP2003, the only difference with FP2002 is that you won't have the Snippets feature. The article is concerned with adding default DocTypes for accessibilty, but the method holds good for what you want to do.

How to make accessible content using FP

RE: How do you remove Default Meta Tags? - 6/28/2006 19:25:45
I'm not getting it. I went to normal.htm and cleared it. Then I put a default setup in

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd">
<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
<META HTTP-EQUIV="reply-to" CONTENT="CardClubUSA@gmail.com">
<META HTTP-EQUIV="distribution" CONTENT="global">
<META HTTP-EQUIV="copyright" CONTENT="1999 CardClubUSA">
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="">
</head>

I saved it as the blank template.

It still uploads my old default Tags.

For SEO if I can't edit this , I can't add Keywords...

Is there a way to beat this ?

This is what a typical page looks like:

<html>

<HEAD>
<TITLE>Welcome to CardClub USA'S sports card & memorabilia supply store</TITLE>
<META NAME="DESCRIPTION" CONTENT="We want to be the largest distributor of sports hobby supplies in the North East. We ship most domestic boxes via US Postal Priority Mail. ">
<META NAME="KEYWORDS" CONTENT="Ultra Pro , BCW , Pro Mold , Card Holders , Top Loaders , Screwdowns , Acyrlics , Cases , Cubes">

<title> Ultra Pro , BCW - Pocket Page Protectors - CardClubUSA</title>
<meta name="description" content="Welcome to CardClubUSA's Pocket Page Protectors. We ship your order in 24-48 Hours">
<meta name="Keywords" content="Pocket Pages , Pockets , Photos , Comics , Magazines , Proof Sets , Coins , Postcards , Tall , 52-56 Topps , Bowman , Silver , Gold , Platinum , Sticker , tobacco , Pro Comic , 5X7 , 8X10 , 4X6 , Polypropylene , Cards , Prints , Pictures , 3 Hole , UV Protection">

<meta http-equiv="reply-to" content="cardclubusa@gmail.com">
<meta http-equiv="bulletin-date" content="Sun, 10 , April , 2005"
content="Microsoft FrontPage 2002">

<style TYPE="text/css"> </style>
<meta http-equiv="bulletin-text" content="CardClubUSA ">
<meta http-equiv="pragma" content="no-cache">
<meta http-equiv="reply-to" content="cardclubusa@gmail.com">
<meta name="author" content="Rand">
<meta name="classification" content="Index Site">
<meta name="copyright" content="Barry">
<meta name="distribution" content="GLOBAL">
<meta name="revisit-after" content="2 days">
<meta name="robots" content="ALL">
<meta name="rating" content="Safe For Kids">

</head>

The first three listed title Desc. , Keywords...are the old default...

Will this kill any SEO?

Did you try saving a blank page without the tags as a FrontPage template and then opening the template via File New Page etc? This actually sounds like it would work to me.

Not quite the same solution as changing Normal.htm to Abbynormal.htm Just kidding.

Saved a blank page without the tags as a FrontPage template and then opened the template via File New Page

When I tried that this is what I got

<!doctype HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd"><html lang="en">
<HEAD>
<META NAME="KEYWORDS" CONTENT="Ultra Pro , BCW , Pro Mold , Card Holders , Top Loaders , Screwdowns , Acyrlics , Cases , Cubes">

<meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="en-us">
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
<meta HTTP-EQUIV="reply-to" CONTENT="CardClubUSA@gmail.com">
<meta HTTP-EQUIV="distribution" CONTENT="global">
<meta HTTP-EQUIV="copyright" CONTENT="1999 CardClubUSA">
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href>

<title>Test 3</title>
<body><p>
Test 3</p>

The default tags are still there.

In my way of thinking, a blank page would have only the following.

<html>

<head>
<title></title>
</head>

<body>

</body>

</html>

I kept the title in. Looks like you had content on this blank page before you saved it: reply to mail CSS style sheet, content, copywrite, etc.

When I saved this and reopened as Template page, FP added the following again. I forgot it is finicky about that.

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
<meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 4.0">
<meta name="ProgId" content="FrontPage.Editor.Document">

Personally, I don't mind charset showing myself, but it does add the ProgId & Generator.

I am not familiar with the method Carol and Brian discussed for altering normal.htm (learn something about the FP beast daily).

As swoosh mentioned, Jimco Software offers a free addin "No FrontPage Meta" which will take care of this on save. Honestly, I haven't used it in a while. Haven't got around to downloading since I got a new CPU.

I appreciate the input and tried that ...
I cleared the normal.htm page completely and saved it as a
FP Template. This is what comes up:

<html>
<HEAD>
<META NAME="KEYWORDS" CONTENT="Ultra Pro , BCW , Pro Mold , Card Holders , Top Loaders , Screwdowns , Acyrlics , Cases , Cubes">

<meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="en-us">
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
<title>Test</title>
<body><p>
Test</p>

The 3 lines remain.

Could they be saved on the remote server?

As far as I know, the content contained in these tags can only appear if they were saved that way or the template save wasn't directed to save over the existing template.
quote:

<TITLE>Welcome to CardClub USA'S sports card & memorabilia supply store</TITLE>
<META NAME="DESCRIPTION" CONTENT="We want to be the largest distributor of sports hobby supplies in the North East. We ship most domestic boxes via US Postal Priority Mail. ">
<META NAME="KEYWORDS" CONTENT="Ultra Pro , BCW , Pro Mold , Card Holders , Top Loaders , Screwdowns , Acyrlics , Cases , Cubes">

Micheal,

Thanks for the input. It's true when I made this site years ago that I probably made 1 page and then just used save as to keep the same basic format.

Perhaps I don't understand the template saving.

Is normal.htm the default template?

If I make a new web under front page , I can cut and paste virtually all of the main pages. I assume that these pages do not have the default tags in them since they are not viewable until unloaded to the server. If that is incorrect .... and if I can copy these "clean" pages to a new web , how do I make sure the new web has no default Tags that will be added?

I use no theme and I don't think I ever made a template in the first place.

Would upgrading to FP2003 make a difference?

I also have no blank default page , when I go to start a new blank page the icon is there and the error comes up : The system cannot find the specified file?

I think the best thing at this point is to follow Brian's link regarding normal.htm. I don't know where else to go with this myself.
