Hi, Teresa -You have an awesome site, but the home page in particular is not optimised for slower connections. The quickest, biggest change you could make is to put a single photo on the home page. The Frontlook Applet looks great, but the 4 photos combined are 69927 bytes and by putting them into a java applet (slower loading than javascripts) it increases the loading time even more. If you go for a single image here, you *might* be able to add those polls back in without too much of an increase in time.
The other thing that is making the load time seem so long is that all the content is nested inside one large table. I'm not sure why it was designed that way, but when you have some time I'd suggest on working on one blank page and re-do the layout without so much nesting. There are one or two tables you don't need that are holding the rest of the tables inside them. You might also email the designer of this layout and ask if they'd be willing to do one page like that for you.
I know you have a ton of content that would need to be copied into a new layout if you did this, but for the long-term usability of the site I think you should consider working on it. Although many people are getting high-speed connections, there is still a huge section of viewers using 24k or slower. The browser won't start to show anything until it's read the content of the first table, which includes the whole page. With stacked tables, it'll quickly show the first one while the next table loads.
The small photos of you and Robert are a bit fuzzy. I'd skip the links to the larger ones and improve the ones that are immediately shown.
Since most of your navigation is done with graphics, I would consider a text link to the site map a must. The top level navigation could be a graphic for the squares and text links... you could keep them white and not underlined by using an inline CSS.
Very huge, informational, wonderful site.
The only other suggestion (not looking in Netscape here, so hopefully that is fine) is to reset your monitor resolution to 800x600 to test view your sites (cavyspirit and cavycages). Some of the pages have a horizontal scroll, others don't. That should be an easy fix.
