Lightbox for text? - 7/6/2006 18:13:23
Does anyone know of something like the Lightbox JS 2.0 that'll work with text rather than an image? (of course valid and accessible).

I've tried replacing the image url in the Lightbox code with the url of a pop-up type page I'm wanting to use, but of course it doesn't work that easy. I specifically thought of the Lightbox script because although I've found plenty of pop-up emulating css stuff, javascripts and things that look nice but aren't accessilble, I specifically want nice transition effects like you get with the Lightbox.

Any ideas anyone?

(GreyBox and ThickBox don't have the nice fancy transitions I'm looking for :))

Can you simply remove the image box from the css and the script and just leave the caption box? You can style the text and background of the caption box?

I'm not sure if this can be done but I just thought maybe you can.

Damn! It's like the waiting for a bus for ages and then three come together (but not quite!) :)
I think I may have found the solution...iBox will overlay images, divs, and HTML on the current page. The transition's kinda dull, but it looks like you can use prototype, and script.aculo.us, etc. with it as well.

I may be a very happy wombly.

My idea isn't quite working. You need an image to have the title that is used as the caption. But with that in mind, you could style all the outer image container divs as transparent with the same opacity as the background and use an image with with display: none?

Just a thought.

Edit: That's not working either. it's not displaying the original small image to click on to get the lightbox to work.

This ibox looks really nice, thanks for posting the link.

I tried using it to open a htm file that has an embedded media player in it. It works in IE, FF and Opera; but when closing the window in FF and O, it generates an error and closes the browser. IE closes fine.

Any ideas why?

The bottom link titled "Weather Video"

Thanks, Ed

Hmmm, not sure. That page is working fine for me (Opera 9 and FF 1.5.0.4). You've got a number of errors coming up on the validator (mostly misformed character entities - you seem to have spaces in a number of them). The fact that it's working fine in IE (doesn't care about standards and is a lot more forgiving of coding errors), but not in Opera and FF (standards compliant browsers) would suggest it's something to do with your code - I don't know, those character entities may do it...

Like I said though, it's working fine for me.

I was amazed that the initial that thick box mentioned was 100KB in extra weight. I can see using the last one that checks in at 11kb. This would make a nice addition to galleries also :).

Nice links.

Take care,

Brian
