quote:
ORIGINAL: Andy from Somerset I guess what I'm saying is that having an issue with the font on design grounds is fine but to criticise it on the grounds of it having Nazi overtones is outdated and totally irrelevant in the 21st century [:)] Yes, I totally agree, but the current view of the blackletter style is different from how the contemporaries saw it. For modern day people it's a dark style, but for them it was beautiful and stately. It can be argued that the current conception was fueled by its use in Nazi propaganda. The style was long forgotten until Germans adapted it and brought it back to knowledge of the mainstream population. Many computer games today use blackletter to invoke a World War II mood—think Wolfenstein, Day of Defeat etc. Design-wise, using blackletter or fraktur in something like the Angel's Message is like using a beautiful and delicate script typeface on a website about Ted Bundy. I had to give some reasons to my critique—saying only that a certain font is a bad choice isn't always enough.
