Suprise suprise - opacity doesn't work properly in IE6 because... well because IE is pretty much rubbish.

Here's a link that will explain it better:

http://www.mandarindesign.com/opacity.html

Whatever solution you choose from there I think you'll need to ensure that you use a complete DOCTYPE (you've only got a partial in there at the moment) otherwise IE6 will behave like IE5 and that's no good at all! With a complete DOCTYPE IE6 will work in Standards Mode and at least pretend to understand some of the more complex CSS rules!

I see tho that according to that article *none* of the major browsers do all properly according to that author. Even the great FF doesn't do everything to the exact spec. I'm not intentionally sticking up for IE but there is a big "slam IE" comittee around this forum and things really should be a little less biased.

And from my perspective, I've never had any issues with IE 6 supporting opacity. I use it on my own homepage with no JavaScripts or IE hacks whatsoever and it renders fine in both IE and FF. So I might have to tweak a little on some pages, but there is no browser that supports *all* the standards. None; nada; nyet.

Hey, IE keeps a lot of other browsers in the "light". [;)]

NO browser supports all the recommendations 100%. Last stats I saw was that Firefox for instance supported about 94% of the regs. IE7 is around 70%. So you see there is quite a difference. None of them are perfect - it's a question of degrees of incompetence! [:D]

womble -> RE: layer opacity not working with IE6 (7/9/2006 15:43:29)

And I'm afraid the most incompetent that causes me the most grief and wasted time accomodating it's incompetency gets a good kicking from me.

Where did you come up with those numbers?

Tailslide -> RE: layer opacity not working with IE6 (7/10/2006 9:56:15)

Ha! I knew you'd ask that! Can I find the damn figures anywhere now? No I can't. You'll have to trust me! It was a survey of various browsers and the % compliance with W3C standards. I saw it fairly recently (within the last 2 weeks). If I find it I'll print the link.

...and your totally unbiased opinions? [:D] [:D]

I'm confident you saw that number in print somewhere. However, numbers can be skewed easily depending on the sources and methods used to derrive these figures.

And of course IE 7 is still in beta so that's really not a fair comparison.

Have you by chance seen any numbers on IE 6?

Tailslide -> RE: layer opacity not working with IE6 (7/10/2006 10:44:56)

Ok found it!

Here you go: http://www.webdevout.net/browser_support_summary.php

And I stand slightly corrected - FF was 91% HTML/XHTML support, IE6 was 73% and IE7 (probably beta2) was 74%.

Suprisingly Opera 8.5 was only 85% on XHTML/HTML (edit: reading elsewhere on this site apparently Opera 9 is a vast improvement in many areas)

And before you go saying "ah yes but that's a Firefox fanboy site!" - there's a page called Firefox Myths in there too!

rdouglass -> RE: layer opacity not working with IE6 (7/10/2006 12:02:35)

C'mon now. If you look at the details, this just seems so biased to me. Did you read the details and what "IE" actually means here?

quote:

There are three families of web browsers shown here by default: IE, Firefox, and Opera. IE includes Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows, Maxthon, Netscape in "I Trust This Site" or Internet Explorer mode, Avant Browser, AOL Browser, and other browsers that use the Trident rendering engine....

AOL Browser as well? No wonder the numbers a re so bad!![:'(]

No real detail is ever discussed about the weighting and how he actually comes to the conclusiomn that IE supports 85% of the img tag and FF supports 99% of it. What part of the img tag does IE *not* support? [&:] That is silly (at best) IMO and who is this guy stating all these numbers. I'm sure there are some facts that these results are based on but they are not revealed nor discussed.

Besides, support 100% standards is not the end-all of a web site (again IMO) anyways. Many items in these lists are relatively obscure and only useful in unique situations. Also, there are things outside the standards realm that are included by browsers. For instance, innerHTML is not in the W3C standards but yet both IE and FF support it. Why is that? 'Cause it's usefull that's why. [;)]

Although I don't agree with the chart as well. There is another page that lists what parts they are referring to.

http://www.webdevout.net/browser_support_html.php?uas=IE6-IE7-FX1_5-OP8

rdouglass -> RE: layer opacity not working with IE6 (7/10/2006 12:22:53)

Oh yeah. I see it now. Yeah, still seems biased to me that not supporting longdesc and name tags would give IE an 88% support rating.

Sometimes these things just muddy the waters and are skewed beyond their usefulness.

Don't get me wrong. I always develop for FF and fix for IE but that chart is just misleading to me.

Tailslide -> RE: layer opacity not working with IE6 (7/10/2006 13:05:45)

I don't have the time or energy to go into another IE is rubbish argument or go through every single thing that IE doesn't support that most of the other browsers do. It just makes me feel old!

Even the chap that's in charge of IE7 admits that they're way behind the curve and not there yet either with IE7. We can but hope that by the time IE8 comes around (hopefully in a year or so rather than 5) that they'll be closing the gap with the opposition.
