Tabindex Question... - 7/12/2006 7:24:47
I've added a tabindex to each component in a form I've created and it's working fine within the form.

My question is though, I have 3 links across the top of the page "Skip", "Site Map" etc, then about 8 or so menu items down the left column, then about 6 external links to member organisations, then 3 links in the footer like "Privacy" etc.

On the other pages within the site, the tabbing just works fine, but on the contact page, it jumps from address bar to Firefox tab, then straight into the name field of the form. Skipping over the skip link, site map etc at the top and before alll the other navigation.

Should I therefore add a tabindex to all of these other links (which appear in all pages via includes) ie. "skip to content" would be 1, Site Map 2, then the left menu "Home" 3, "About Us"4 etc, and then start the form tabindex numbers before the membership badge links and the footer links?

Also, if I did this, what would happen if the user pressed "enter" on "Skip to Content" and then tabbed? Would they tab through the form first or would they return to the navigation menu?

I'm half nutting this out as I type, what if I did this....

Along the top....

"Skip" 1
"Site Map" 2

Left Side Menu...

"Home" 9
"About Us" 10...

and used tabs 3 - 8 on the contact page?

Nicole

Unless you've got a very complex organisation of markup I wouldn't bother with a tabindex at all on anything. If you add in another link in the middle of a page you've got to change all your tabindexes - it's a nightmare and not worth the effort for anyone. Tab through your page and see if it all makes sense without the tabindex in there - 99% of the time it's fine. Same goes with forms - unless they're nightmarishly complex - I wouldn't bother.

Tab through your page - bet it makes sense already. You've also got skip links probably which means you can go anywhere on the page easily and quickly.

And yes, I know it mentions tabindexes (tabindicies?) on various accessibility checkers - but they also mention access keys and they're next to useless too.
