womble -> AMP and Port 80 (7/13/2006 20:07:04)

After deciding today I was going to try installing me some AMP (Apache (web server), MySQL (database) and php (server side scripting)) on my laptop for testing purposes, and coming across this thread I decided to give WAMP a go. Ridiculously easy to install (less than five minutes - too easy?), but then I hit a problem browsing to http://localhost/ where I should have been able to see the lovely index page. What did I see? Nothing! A little fiddling and I established that I could get something to happen (a 404) if I used my IP address instead of localhost, but then I gave up in frustration. Tonight, I came back to it and then managed to solve the problem in less than five minutes with the help of XAMPP's FAQs.

Web servers on development machines do not co-exist happily with Skype, as I discovered, because Skype can also use port 80. Simple fix though. There's an option in Skype (Tools>Options>Connection) that says "use port 80 and 443 as alternatives for incoming connections". Uncheck the box and restart Skype, and WAMP works fine on port 80. Success!

Result - happy Wombly!

Spooky -> RE: AMP and Port 80 (7/13/2006 22:27:04)

Its always the little things :-)
My favorite is "script blocking" and "worm protection" in norton - kills IIS code every time [8|]
