You will need to do something about optimising your images.

There is one on the home page - TQCSTGRDSHIPLOGO.gif that is vey small in dimensions but weighs in at 165293 bytes - way, way too big.

Also the way your links and graphics line up on the home page is confusing - they seem to be closer to the link after them than the one to which they apply. I clicked on one expecting to go to Fine Art and ended up in Graphics.

I know that using thumbnails is very convenvient but for an art site I really think it is worth creating small and large images and linking them to each other rather than using the auto thumbnail feature. On a site like this image quality is really important and the thumbnails are a bit distorted and not a good reflection of the actual images. It is laborious enough but I really think would be worth it in the end.

I don't know any other way to say it, but that background color is awful. I'm really sorry, but it doesn't compliment the art work at all, but distracts from it.

I would think that it would be important to the artist to have an attractive header for his site. He apparently does graphics...hit him up for one if you don't feel comfortable doing it. But really, it just needs to be something very simple that shows he has some class, but again, not distracting from the pictures of his work.

The site needs consistent navigation throughout, preferably near the top of the page and at the bottom if needed.

On the biography page it would look better if the words wrapped around the picture instead of having a big white gap.

The font needs to be consistent throughout the site...same style, size, weight, etc.

It looks like he's done some nice work. Now the challenge is for you to display it to its best advantage. It might be a good idea to surf around at some other artist's sites to see how they have done it. Don't copy them, but be open for ideas.

Best wishes,
Sandy

I agree with the feedback from both Kathrine and Sandy. I just have a few additional suggestions. Presentation is always important on a web site but I think that on an artist's site it is doubly important.

If you link small and large images as Kathrine suggested you can place the large image on the page in a way that really presents it rather then just having it show up in the corner of a white page.

I also think that all of the pictures need to be reworked. They need to be crisp and bright. In the chainsaw carvings I can hardly make out the details on some of the pictures. Detail is important in that type of art. Another example is the Peninsula Womens Clinic sign. It's crooked. That can be straightened up in a graphics program.

There is some really great photography but as with the other pictures it is grainy. Also, I notice you are using .bmp format. Even on my DSL fast connection it is slow to load. Those need to be changed to .jpg images.

One other thing. I found some of the really neat stuff like the photography accidently by clicking on the Alternative format portfolio link which is small and at the bottom. I think a lot of visitors might not even click there thinking it just a text representation of the larger links.

I'd also drop a lot of the moving stuff on the alternative portfolio link. It is really distracting.

Hang in there. This can be a really great site.
