Internal server error for shtml.dll - 7/14/2006 10:55:54
Hi. I'm trying to get the FrontPage server extensions running on my PC, and when I publish from FrontPage it tells me the server extensions aren't installed, but of course, they are.

Both the server log and entering http://mypc/_vti_bin/shtml.dll into a browser give a 500 Internal server error. The event log lists "The server failed to load application '/LM/W3SVC'. The error was 'The specified metadata was not found.'. "

_vti_bin points to the right place (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\40\isapi), and I can see the contents in the browser if I turn on Directory browsing for it.

I've got "Scripts and Executables" set for permissions on _vti_bin. Check Server Extensions on the served directories shows no problems.

The IIS server otherwise is working fine. It serves up pages, executes Perl scripts, etc, etc, no problem (I don't use the FrontPage extensions other than for publishing).

I've tried reinstalling the extensions from the XP CD, but no luck.

Not sure if it's relevant to the problem, but I note the _vti_inf.html file has FPShtmlScriptUrl="_vti_bin/shtml.dll/_vti_rpc". Should I have a _vti_rpc virtual directory? 'cos I don't....

Any help much appreciated.

Regards
Marios

are you still there Mario?

I'm not sure of the exact question here, it seems to say you can't publish?

You URLs are not right, the site needs to be setup in IIS, and your URL would read something like http://localhost/mario_site_1/for_example.

Also, what do the server logs say?

Dear Caywind,

My sites are setup in IIS, they're serving up pages fine. It's publishing from FrontPage to them using the server extensions that isn't working (publishing using FTP works).

The reason for the URL I gave is that if you enter http://<wherever>/_vti_bin/shtml.dll into a browser you should get a page returned that says Cannot run the FrontPage Server Extensions on this page: "". It's the standard simple way of determining if the extensions are installed and working on a site.

However, I'm getting a 500 Internal server error, both in the browser and in the server logs. The same when I try to publish.

Regards
Marios
