Offline marketing works too. - 7/19/2006 15:24:12
I do spend some time marketing online. but as a fledgling webmaster and a product of the MTV generation I have always been prone to a more active and personal approach. If you have to give it a name, I guess you could call it guerilla marketing.

Basically I do things that I have always liked to do as a part of my marketing strategy. And all my marketing activites seem to come down to doing things that we have all done since kindergarden. It's like Show and tell really.

I make flyers because I like to be funny and creative. I tell people what I do, because I like to talk. I show people my website because I'm proud of it. And I follow up because I consider everyone my friend, wierd right?

On the web there has always been this weird world called online marketing and if you didn't grow up with computers it can be a bit overwhelming. Market analysis, link popularity, page rank, algorithms, blah, blah ,blah.

Offline its a totally different story. You print off 1500 flyers. go to the places where you market group would hang. Throw up some flyers for a week or so to create a buzz, and eureka you have traffic. Fast, cheap, measurable and many times not nearly as much competition.

It's been my experience that a good word of mouth and offline guerilla campaign can really offset the lack of online marketing marketing dollars and experience you may or may not have. What do you guys think?

There's been a recent thread about this sort of thing and it seems a few people have found mentioning around their local area what they do for a living and handing out business cards etc. has been quite successful for them.

I too find many site owners those who are performing very well online are slowly diverting back to old marketing school, possibly they dont want to leave that arena fully blank.

I feel every marketing technique is helpful.

I, unfortunately, live in a city where flyers are banned, it's against the law to solicit if businesses have a sign of "no soliciting". People are tired of telemarketers so if you call them to offer a decent product, the nice ones will hang up on you. The mean ones will insult you. Emails are treated as spam. Magazine ads are expensive and lack credibility because so many poeple have let their customers down when it comes to web design. Sometiems we are perceived as 'snake oil peddlers'.

All those obstacles do not stop me from doing some offline marketing. I firmly believe that web design must be marketed like any other product. Truth, however, is that the vast majority of my clients are referrals from other clients.

Altenratively you may consider local networking with chambers of commerce and participation in trade shows, events and educational seminars that might give you good results.
