dennis -> torn edges on pic - want background to show (7/19/2006 17:50:11)

I want to edit a photo (Photoshop Elements 3.0) and create a "torn edge" effect, which I am able to do in PSE. When I insert the photo into my web page, instead of the page background showing through the "edge", it shows the pic as a regular rectangle with a white background instead. see http://djonesassoc.com/condosatthelake/
I'd like the white background to not be there and instead have the page background show through. When I look at it in PSE, the edged part shows the gray/white checkerboard indicating that that part of the image has been erased, yet it shows up in FP. I tried using the "set transparent color" in FP but it always leaves pixels showing. It's got to be simple - what am I missing?

I'm not sure if there's a WYSIWYG way to do this (I don't use FP these days really), but in either code or split view, try changing code for that image to this:

<img border="0" src="fvl206-edge.jpg" width="240" height="187" align="left" style="background-color: transparent;">

Simple, you've saved it as a jpeg. Jpegs don't have transparency. You need to save it as a gif or a png. Be warned though, png file transparency doesn't work in all browsers.

Why didn't I spot that? [:-] I'm blaming the heat...[;)]

Thank you Jaybee. Another day and I HAVE learned something. Your answer was dead on and resolved my problem. Thanks!

or save it as a jpeg with the same colour background as the area you're placing it, though with jpeg you may experience some slight shift in colour so it may not exactly match the area in which you put it

I considered that Dave, and have done that before. Unfortunately, this time I'm using a background that is not a solid color, so I'd still end up with a square box around my pic.

ok :)

sorry Dave if my answer sounded snippish - it wasn't meant to be. I posted my response largely thinking about someone else who might be reading this down the line and just wanted to point out that your answer works well if the background is a solid color, but there are still issues if it is a gradient/photo/texture. I greatly appreciate the time that you (and others) take to respond to questions like mine. They're what make this forum so great.

Don't think Dave was upset. If he was, you wouldn't have got the smiley. Glad you got sorted.

nope i wasn't upset - just in a hurry to answer so my reply sounded a bit, well, short! [:D][:D][:D]
