Nicole -> Another Reason WebStats Are Important! (7/19/2006 22:58:06)

I have a number of clients in the community service sector, mostly they're government funded, sometimes publicly funded and I guess some are privately funded, but generally if you're designing sites for anyone who is answerable to a funding body, make sure that the web host you sign them up with, or the one they want to sign up with provides very detailed statistics in a number of areas. Most notably for one client who called me in a panic this morning who's organisation is under serious threat if they can't justify their existence better, a break down of the geographic location of their site visitors, to the nearest city or even suburb if necessary. This particular client is only funded to provide support to people in New South Wales, yet as they're the only officially recognised organisation of their type in Australia, they end up providing at least some support to other states, the pacific islands and other countries in south east Asia. Having calmed my client down a little, I directed him to his host's control panel, and guided him through to the statistical reports, which had changed since I last looked at them. Needless to say that the geographical reports only went as far as "country" which may leave them in a dilemma as far as using the website statistics to proove how many site visitors come from this state. So, I believe anyway, that making sure a host provides very detailed stats for these types of clients can be of extreme importance. In the meantime I now have several days work adding Google Analytics to their extensive site, lucky I was one of the first people to have signed up for this service as they still don't seem to be allowing new accounts. Hope this info may be useful to others. Nicole
