Another Reason WebStats Are Important! - 7/19/2006 22:58:06
I have a number of clients in the community service sector, mostly they're government funded, sometimes publicly funded and I guess some are privately funded, but generally if you're designing sites for anyone who is answerable to a funding body, make sure that the web host you sign them up with, or the one they want to sign up with provides very detailed statistics in a number of areas.

Most notably for one client who called me in a panic this morning who's organisation is under serious threat if they can't justify their existence better, a break down of the geographic location of their site visitors, to the nearest city or even suburb if necessary.

This particular client is only funded to provide support to people in New South Wales, yet as they're the only officially recognised organisation of their type in Australia, they end up providing at least some support to other states, the pacific islands and other countries in south east Asia.

Having calmed my client down a little, I directed him to his host's control panel, and guided him through to the statistical reports, which had changed since I last looked at them. Needless to say that the geographical reports only went as far as "country" which may leave them in a dilemma as far as using the website statistics to proove how many site visitors come from this state.

So, I believe anyway, that making sure a host provides very detailed stats for these types of clients can be of extreme importance.

In the meantime I now have several days work adding Google Analytics to their extensive site, lucky I was one of the first people to have signed up for this service as they still don't seem to be allowing new accounts.

Hope this info may be useful to others.

Nicole

AWStats is also a really good tool, much more helpful than Google Analytics, though for most hosting companies you will have to install it yourself. (Mine supplies an easy install script to add it to your chosen domain)

I have AWstats on my site, but it doesn't record geo locations down to individual states and then individual cities like Google Analytics

True, but it gives you shedloads more info about other things. :)

I am planning to migrate my site to a new hosting company next month. I love everything about this new company...except the fact that the only web stats they offer is Webalizer, which I find pretty useless. My current host has several stats, including AwStats, which I love, but the new company doesn't seem interested in adding AwStats to their services. I'm planning to go with them anyway -- their customer service is second to none, but holding my hand through a home AwStats installation is more than even they are prepared to take on.

Whenever I've looked at Sourceforce on how to install AwStats on my home Windows computer, my eyes glaze over and my teeth start to itch. I've asked around a couple of local computer geeks I know to see if they can help me but no luck.

Most of my tech literacy is old and out of date. All these new fangled thangs that come out practically every day make my head explode trying to keep up with it all. So the thought of trying to climb yet another learning curve is not something I look forward to.

Does anyone know if there's anywhere where someone like myself (computer semi-literate, most of it out of date) (and with a budget that's through the floor at the moment) can get some hand-holding help to set up AwStats on my home 'puter? Maybe there's a website out there with drop-dead-simple instructions for the technologically aged? :)

Thanks Brian! I'll check out some of the local ones to see if they offer help to individuals like me (rather than just webhosts or people who operate their own servers).

But I haven't given up trying to convince this new webhost to add AWStats to their list of features. I talked with them about it again today. (Keeping my fingers crossed...)
