Password Problem - 10/26/2001 15:34:00
Hello, I want to password protect just one page on my website. I opened my web live and opened the page i wanted to password protect. I then accessed tools / security / then permissions. After setting the only registered users have browse access I set a name and password for that page. I then went to preview in browser and found that I password protected the entire site when i just wanted to do one specific page. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Can you add a subweb and perform the same action?

Your protected page would just be one level lower.

Create a folder on you web to put that page in. Then, on Frontpage, click that folder and select "Convert to Web".

Then you can open that folder as a separate FrontPage Web and change permissions only on that page instead of on the whole website.

What he meant is, put the page in a folder then make that folder a subweb (sub directory). Right click on the folder file name > Convert to Subweb. You can then set permissions for the subweb.

You might find some helpful information here: http://www.outfront.net/frontpagesubwebs.htm

Click on a page file name then File > Preview in browser. Let us know if that doesn't work.

Hi Guys,

Now that i've made changes to the website live, how can i go back to making changes to the site and then updating the site instead of everything being done as I do it. Thanks for all your help!

The only thing you needed to do live was set permissions. If that's all you did, just continue as before.

If you made changes to your site while you were in there, you will need to open it live again and publish back to your hard drive.

Next time you make changes on your hard drive, publish as usual. If the changes affect the new subweb, click Include Subwebs in the Publish Web dialog box.

If you change only the subweb page, you can publish it independantly.

Hi David,

Open your site live > File > Publish Web > the url will look something like: file:///C:/My Documents/My Webs/xxxxxx > OK.

Type the name of your web where the x's are.

You're welcome,
Sandy

Hi, i'm sure i'm driving you crazy with this. I followed your instructions and everything was working great. All my files were being transfered, then at the very end I keep getting a server error which says "There is no web named "/bin". Thanks again!!

Are you sure that's the name of your web? At the very top of your Folder list, does it say: file:///C:/My Documents/My Webs/bin ? Whatever it says up there is the url where you should publish.

If that is in order, make sure the web is closed when publishing back to it.

Let us know if that doesn't fix it.

Hi, at the top of my folder list it says http://mydomain.com and underneath its has folders with names of bin, etc, lib32. I never created these folders. The first I saw of them is when I opened my site live to set the permissions. Now I goto file, publish web, type in my file:///C:/My Documents/My Webs/filename. Its starts transferring all my files, then at the end when its starts processing, I get the server error: There is no web named "/bin". I dont' know what i'm missing. Thank you.

Have to keep hitting the pass word, even though I have checked the box to save pass word. One time it will show that the box is check with all information go to submit and
the pass word and name are blank. It will take up to seven times! Before it will let me in the Front page on the sheets that I have been working on.
Tried to let the program search for errors twice. Deleted the program and reloaded it twice. The same thing is happening.

--David--

Sounds like the /bin is where it is keeping certain files needed for your site..(maybe PW info stuff)
search for it on ur C: drive and in PWS (Personal Web Server) make a Virtual Directory to it..then FP will always find it..

Hope that helps

David, referring to my earlier post, this will be in FrontPage on your hard drive, not live: file:///C:/My Documents/My Webs/bin. Check there to see what it says.

THEN open your site live and publish to that url...whatever it really is.

Bob, you are working live? Usually (there are exceptions) it's a good idea to do your work on your hard drive, then publish to your server. This will give you a back-up in case something happens to your server and they lose your site. (it has happened to me)

Hi Guys..Thank you for your help so far. Ok, this is what I did. Since I couldn't get the site to publish on my hard drive, I created a new file and imported the web. I now have all my files on my hard drive and everything is looking good. Now, I need to set permissons to a specific page. I created a subweb. I goto tools but the security option is grayed out. What do I have to do now so I don't get myself again into the problem that got me here in the first place. Thank you!

First, test your site in a browser to make sure all your links work. If you imported, they may not.

To set permissions for the subweb, you will need to open it live to do so.
