Spaces in URL - 7/28/2006 9:22:10
I know that generally you don't put spaces in your URL. But I can't remember why. People always put dashes or underscores. Anyway, I accidently put a space in one of my folders and I didn't realize it until I was checking Google and saw the '%20' in my URL. Now that it is indexed, I don't really want to change it. But I was wondering why it would matter anyway. Is it because you don't want people to type %20 for the type in traffic? I don't think I need to worry about type in traffic down to a specific folder. At least not for this site at this point in time. Is there any other reason?

It's because of the different ways different operating systems handle filenames - specifically Unix operating systems don't allow spaces. Using an underscore or a hyphen is your best chance of making sure your pages still work if you move to a different server with a different OS. This has come up before and I dug out a couple of articles on filenaming that might be useful here.
