Tailslide -> dumb question about digital cameras (7/29/2006 12:37:17)

Hi

Most digital cameras operate at a ratio of 4:3. I've set up a DB with image resizing which resizes all images with that ratio in mind.

Problem is, my client is producing images that are greatly different from 4:3 and are therefore squashed by the DB resizing thingy. He says that his camera is 640 x 480 but he's actually producing images that are very different ratio.

Would it be likely that a digital camera would enlarge to fit a wider subject or has he just got the wrong setting?

Weird photo sizes can occur when you crop. Ask your client if he is cropping the photos before sending them to you.

could be a panoramic function like on asp cameras??

can't you set some batch process up in your image editor to make them the right proportions?

Tailslide -> RE: dumb question about digital cameras (8/1/2006 3:00:31)

He says he's not doing any editing of the image.

Dave - is there a way to disable a panoramic function? Is it likely to be something that the client can disable and go back to the normal 4:3 ratio? The whole idea of this was that he wouldn't have to do any photo editing at all - just upload the original digital images.

i don't really know - seeing as most digi cameras seem to come in the standard ratios i assume he could take pics like that as well - ask him to check and if he doesn't know ask what camera make and model it is and find the online manual for it and see if it says there :)

my camera takes panoramas by stitching together conventional ratio pics, and all my various resolutions are in the same ratios

That's a good idea Andy, I'll ask for the make and model and look it up myself.

who's Andy?? :)

Nicole -> RE: dumb question about digital cameras (8/1/2006 4:49:41)

This is Andy!

Perhaps it's your avatar Dave, perhaps Tail's getting confused?

Doh! sorry Dave - trying to do about 6 different things at the same time. I was talking to someone called Andy when I was typing the message!

I wish that were strictly true it would save me having to crop to standard sizes. My Canon DSLRs have a ratio of 3:2 which generally doesn't match up to standard print sizes (except 4x6 in prints). If I want 5x7, 8x10 or 11x14 in prints I have to crop. I believe some Nikon DSLRs have a similar crop factor.

d a v e -> RE: dumb question about digital cameras (8/1/2006 6:44:20)

i was thinking more of standard screen ratios (vga,svga,xvga....) i.e. multiples of 640x489 ;) it's annoying that they aren't quite the standard print sizes and heads get chopped!!
