Add validate entire site to FF - 7/30/2006 4:17:52
I recently came across a site which allows you to validate an entire site via the WDG validator which is cool. BUT this link:

http://www.dotjay.co.uk/2005/03/21/add-validate-entire-site-to-web-developer-extension

gives instructions as to how you can add this option onto the FF web developer toolbar so you've got the option there at the click of a button!

It works too!

Thanks Tail,

...it's not actually working for me but perhaps I did something wrong.

I found everything the link you provided suggested and called it "Validate Entire Site" which then ended up under "tools" on the web developer toolbar. I selected it and nothing seemed to happen, twice, so I rebooted firefox thinking that I maybe should've done that. But now the option doesn't appear under "tools" anymore and trying to add it again in the options just doesn't seem to work.

Interested if anyone else has this problem as I'd really like to get it working. It looks like a very time-saving tool!

Nicole

Did you tick the URL box in the Add Tools section?

Edit: also - did you add the extra bit for XHTML sites into the URL as otherwise nothing would happen if you tried this on an XHTML site.

I may be being completely thick here so please bear with me and explain in words of one syllable if possible as the heat is robbing me of all normality.

Great tool. Clever. But, I validate each page as I go, why would I want to run an entire site through?

The only thing I can think is that when the site is complete, you run it as a double check. Or you run it against somebody else's site so you can have a good laugh.

Isn't it just a toy taking up more space?

I agree with what you're saying Jaybee, but in my case, the way I work I guess (we all have different methods don't we?) I check as I go also, and again at site completion stage, but AT site completion stage, when you know you have it all validating or think you do, I figure it's quicker and easier if I can validate all pages at the same time in case one error is repeated across many pages, I can see what the error is and on which pages I've repeated it on.

On a 20 page site it might equate to saving 10 minutes typing in all page URL's, which is good, and on larger sites even better.

There are a zillion validation services out there now, each one I guess is adapted to the author's way of working. This one I feel is the closest I've found (or Tail found for me) that suits the way I work.

Nicole

Exactly - it's a useful way of checking that you haven't forgotten anything.

OK. It's just that I get more and more extensions, then FF updates and half of them don't play with the new version, so I leave them there waiting for the update.

All of which means that the FF footprint gets bigger and bigger and half of it doesn't work.

I'm a little loathe to keep adding more

The explaination of how to do it is not very clear, they miss out a few steps...

It won't work on a pw protected site (though the single page in web developer tools does) and the keyboard shortcut won't work for me either.

I don't use FF to validate as one has to go through menus I use the AIS toolbar in ie which lets me do it with one click for either css or html.

I wonder if this could be done in ie with the AIS toolbar .. mmmmm

Have you got the FF web developer toolbar?
