reinstall FrontPage to remove images? - 7/30/2006 7:08:30
FrontPage doesn't remove deleted images and pages when I publish updates.

How can I fix this, please?

Thanks,
in a quandary!

Open your site live, select Tools > Recalculate Hyperlinks and clear your cache (just in case).

No need to reinstall the app.:)

Hi, Mike,

I did what you said, including clearing the cache from Firefox, but still have the problem.

After I change an image or create a backup page before editing the original page and test it, I then delete the unwanted images or pages when I'm in FrontPage and upload the updated or new things.

FP is not checking to see if I want it to delete the old stuff from the server.

It always did that before. I just created two test pages and deleted them from within the FP folders while making a tiny change to some other page just to make FP do something.

It didn't give a prompt asking to remove the files that are no longer on my hard drive and it didn't remove them from the server. They are still there.

Help again, please! :-)

Thank you,
quandary

Just to make sure I'm getting your workflow...

You're making changes to the images/pages on a copy of your site and then "publishing" the revised copy to your live site?

If you open your copy in FP and go through the steps to publish you should see the folder structure for both the local and remote sites, are there any conflicts showing?

yes, to both questions.

on the hard drive list there is no a-test.html and on the server side it is there.

Have you tried "synchronize"? Personally I've never actually used it but it would seem to be the next step, anyone step in if it doesn't seem so to you. (please :))

I searched FP's help for synchronize since I don't see it, but it only showed various ways of publishing. I use FP server extensions if that's any clue.

Where is synchronize?

Look in the lower right hand corner when you've got both structures showing in the publish mode...
Publish options should show >
Local to Remote
Remote to Locate or
Synchronize

I'm using FP 2002. I still don't see Synchronize.

I have the publish mode open with the local structure on the left and the remote structure on the right. The only other things I see are options (looked but it wasn't there) and "include subwebs" which is unchecked because I'm not using FP to publish any subwebs.

I recalculated the hyperlinks again just to try it but it still didn't remove the local pages I deleted. I viewed the log and it shows all my folders were re-created.

What next, please?

OK let's try doing this step by step and see how it goes. Determine whether your local or remote site is the latest and greatest and publish that to the other copy of the site following the steps below.

  • On the File menu, click Publish Web.
  • In the Publish dialog box, click Options and select the Publish tab.
  • Under Publish:, select the Changed pages only option and click OK.
  • Click Publish and FrontPage will ask if you want to delete the pages and files that are present on the server, but not in your current Web. (or vice versa depending on which is correct)
  • Click Yes to delete the specified file in the prompt or Yes to All to delete all of the files that you deleted from the current Web.

Were you prompted as indicated and are both site the same now?

I saw that the "Changed pages only option" <was> checked and FP still didn't prompt me about removing files when I clicked publish.

So, next under the "changes" section in the publish options, I unchecked "Use source file timestamps to determine changes since last publish" and checked "Determine changes by comparing source and destination webs".

FP asked if I wanted it to remove files and replace files, so I thought it was fixed.

I created a new test page, uploaded it, viewed it online and then deleted it from the hard drive within FP.

When I uploaded I was asked if I wanted that file removed from the server and it did. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of files on the remote side than aren't on the local side so I still have the problem.

Should I just go through all the file names via my FTP prograrm and delete the old ones and hope that FP will perform correctly from now on?

Thank you!

If you're mixing FTP and the FP publish feature that may very well be the problem. If you have a FP site and use various components within FP that require the extensions I do not recommend using FTP unless you do so in a controlled manner (you're running the risk of corrupting the extensions). My guess is that FP hasn't indexed any of the items that you've FTPed to the site and won't update them when you decide to use the publish feature.
I may be wrong and stand to be corrected but...

I do not mix those components. I never upload via FTP. I have no choice but to delete via FTP if we can't resolve this problem, because I'm getting orders for stuff that has been sold out.

What next, Mike?

Create a new empty site on your local machine and "publish" your www site to it. Make your modifications to the (new) local site and then publish it back (changed pages only) and see what happens.

OK, I will let you know the results! I actually have a new domain I can experiment with.
Thanks!

Mike, I did as you said and made a few changes and uploaded a few times.

The index-old.html file that I removed from the local machine is still on the remote site.

Any suggestions, please?

Thanks!

Hi, Mike,

I discussed this problem with someone who said FP never removed pages for them, so as long as it's now asking if I want to replace updated pages, I'm fine!

I appreciate your help very much!
