Nicole -> Blue Screen of Death strikes Again! (8/2/2006 8:29:17)

Hi guys,

It started a month or so ago with this 12 month old Dell Dimension 8400 starting to make rumbling/churning noises, only very faintly, but when you sit alongside it day in day out you know when it's making these noises. Then the off blue screen occasionally appeared, now twice in the one day, once when trying to open Google Earth, the other when trying to change my screen resolution to check a website. Now, and I've tried about 3 times, I'm crashing every time I try to do either of these two things.

I have various spyware and McAfee Anti-Virus installed, the latter runs automatically at 2.30am each day the others I run at least once daily along with a disc cleanup and a defrag, the defrag is telling me I have 86% clear.

A while ago I found many mysterious files on my computer and a very helpful link on what to look for and how or whether to delete them, right now I can't find these files and/or the link I found before. I have deleted all temporary files I could find but the problem still exists.

I did find a link to "Registry Fix" that did uncover 811 registry errors but the free version only removed 14 of them and still the problem exists.

Please, does anyone know what's going on with this computer?

I don't play games on it, nor store huge files or watch videos on it, it's only used for browsing and web design.

Thanks

Nicole

Where are these mystery noises coming from within the PC. A harddrive on it's way out perhaps?

As for the spyware/registry issues, I'd run hijackthis and see what info that gives up as per the thread Dave started below in this forum.

Nicole -> RE: Blue Screen of Death strikes Again! (8/2/2006 9:17:09)

Hi Taz,

Please don't get me wrong, the noises are faint but they're definate. Quite faint, not like I'd expect to hear if the hard drive was about to pack it in (touching wood).

I had hijack this, but deleted it just the other day because I never had the time to learn how to use it. I'll download it agian tomorrow morning and read Dave's thread.

Thanks

Nicole

A similar thing happened to me last month - the noises were definately there and I thought hard drive? But as both of them were less than a year old, surely not. It turned out to be a loose connection (plus dust and cat fur [:D] ). I too went down the malware route as well.

PS. Yes that is a Hijack This log.

d a v e -> RE: Blue Screen of Death strikes Again! (8/2/2006 10:27:31)

maybe your fan is getting sluggish and your computer is overheating?? (hence the blue screen). my old, old pc used to crash more than Stevie Wonder in a Formula 1 race because the pc fan wasn't adequate

Taz -> RE: Blue Screen of Death strikes Again! (8/2/2006 12:46:55)

Antec fans are worth the money if your current fans are not doing the job.

Nicole -> RE: Blue Screen of Death strikes Again! (8/2/2006 18:43:58)

Thanks guys,

I'll take a look at the dust and cat fur issuue this morning and report back. Gosh if that's the problem it could've waited just one more week don't you think. I'm moving then!

Nicole -> RE: Blue Screen of Death strikes Again! (8/2/2006 19:30:59)

Very little dust, surprisingly, and it's still happening.

I'll read Dave's thread now I think!

Nicole -> RE: Blue Screen of Death strikes Again! (8/2/2006 22:14:45)

Problem Solved!

I cleaned the little dust and cat hair from the computer, nothing changed!

I downloaded a-squared from the link Caz prvided in Dave's thread, it found 55 potential threats which were all removed and still the problem wasn't fixed!

I then checked in add/remove programs and found that I had 3 huge programs all called "Freedom Scientific Synthesizer", checked and they were all related to the JAWS screen reader I downloaded the other week, deleted them all and everything's working fine again.

So thanks for putting up with my pathetic paranoid rants about my computer based on a total lack of knowledge of all things technical, I'm just glad to have things working again as usual.

Nicole
