MrBone -> doing a make over. Need help with three colors to use (8/2/2006 19:18:56)

I am going to take everyones advise on my last post. That post was "Need another color for my web site".

Here is what my web site looks like now
http://www.nicepeoplehere.com/

1) I need three colors that make you feel happy and friendly. Here is web site I am going to pick my colors from. What one do you like?
http://www.colorschemer.com/schemes/?sort=rating&start=0

2) A member on this OutFront is working on my banner.

3) Image hot spots. I am going to take that out of there. I will just go ahead and use my page hyperlink colors.

4) I TALK way to much on my web site. Going to try to get right to the point.

This is the main stuff I will be working on. Right now I just need a answer to three colors that make you feel happy and friendly.

Thank You
Tony

Hi again Tony,

I thought you needed to use orange and blue, hence my raving on about how good those 2 colours can look together. If you don't need to use those colours specifically then you've found a good site to select colours from.

To me though, are you sure you're looking for "happy" colours which to me is bright colours like pink, yellow, blue, green, red, or are you looking more for "friendly" colours which to me are colours that blend together more, ones I like are blues, greens and yellows.

The thing, your site isn't solely for children.

Nicole

Hi everyone,

Here is what I have so far. I want to know if guys like the yellow background? So far I have one vote for "Yes" with the yellow background.

http://www.nicepeoplehere.com/index2.html

A member on Outfront put together the banner for me. I did not have the best picture for him to work with. But he turn it around to make it look very nice. I love how he did the "Joining Together". Really brings out the banner more.

I am thinking about staying with the orange and blue. But add the yellow and not the gray. So it would be Orange, Blue and Yellow. What do you think?

I still have yet put the links and the new layout.

Thank You
Tony
P.S. I was not sure if I should have put this members name or not. But he is helping me big time and that means a lot to me. Thank You

Hi Tony,

IMO, I think the yellow takes away from the banner, which obviously should be the focal point. Too many bright colors and when I went there I immediately was drawn to the background not the banner.

Then again, maybe it's because you were asking about the background

anderskorte -> RE: doing a make over. Need help with three colors to use (8/4/2006 14:06:29)

I think that index2 you posted is really nice. It's very vibrant and positive.

I love how he did the "Joining Together"

I like it too, it very lively. I think it takes a bit too much attention from the other parts of the page, but nothing big. It still works.

What I would work on now is the body copy, to make it more interesting. Not the content itself, but the way it's presented. It's bland to have a regular Arial body text against the vibrant layout. Here's an example of how to make body copy interesting: Flickr. Emphasize, catch attention, maybe make it bigger etc. etc.

Also the “Welcome” and “Joining Together” headings don't yet stand out enough — once again, steal attention, make them scream like the rest of the design. Right now they look like headings from Wikipedia (despite the colors). Here's an example of attention-catching headings: Serial Cut (just something from the top of my head, not the best possible example).

I hope this helps.

womble -> RE: doing a make over. Need help with three colors to use (8/4/2006 14:16:47)

I think I agree with with Swoosh. That background (though lovely) is just too much for that banner - it totally overwhealms it. I like that banner very much, but somehow it doesn't go with the bright cheerful image thing if you see what I mean. I think it works okay with the rest of the page, but that bright yellow is just too much.

I use the paid version of the Color Schemer where the different colour schemes you posted the other day were (Color Schemer Studio) and that has photo-schemer in with it - you load the pic and it helps you to pick a colour scheme from the colours in the photo. I do seem to recall a while back someone posting an online tool that did pretty much the same thing. I can't remember where it was, but you'll probably find it somewhere in 'hints and tips'.

I've just tried that pic in the 'photo schemer', and on the whole it's coming up with pretty muted colour schemes, which is probably not the tone you want to set. The attached is a compilation of screenshots of the schemes it selected (it uses a random 7 points from the image to select the colours). Personally, if I were going with that banner I'd possibly try on of the light blues as a background to complement the blue and orange of the title text.

this was the online colour palette generator

womble -> RE: doing a make over. Need help with three colors to use (8/4/2006 14:41:09)

Ah, yes - that's the one!

anderskorte -> RE: doing a make over. Need help with three colors to use (8/4/2006 15:11:04)

It's the same background color that's on FontShop — I browse it everyday, and it's not distracting at all.

d a v e -> RE: doing a make over. Need help with three colors to use (8/4/2006 15:12:59)

yep but on fontshop the amount of colour is balanced by the black/white/grey and the areas of focus work with that.

I agree with Dave there. It's not that I'm against the background color on Tony's Page. I just think it takes away from the banner and the orange links at the top.

anderskorte -> RE: doing a make over. Need help with three colors to use (8/4/2006 16:14:23)

Hmm. Outfront 2, Anderskorte 0. Not good. I guess I have to agree.

MrBone, go balance those colors. [;)]

MrBone -> RE: doing a make over. Need help with three colors to use (8/5/2006 10:36:17)

I have to agree with you guys. The yellow background is to bright and takes you away from the banner.

Here is the deal. If I stay with the Orange and Blue, I am going to have to use a light blue background or a light grey background. Here is the background I feel could work, IF I stay with the Orange and Blue.

http://www.nicepeoplehere.com/index3.html

This works, BUT it just has to much blue for me. I like blue, but not that much. But I might still work with this. Maybe if I add the yellow more in the body. This might brighten this up a bit. .

I will work with more yellow in the body first. This don't work. Then I will look into having THREE bright colors that will work together.

I will get back with you guys in a couple of days. I am really going to focus on this for the next two days. Because my wife and kids are out of state.

Again, your guys help means a LOT to me. Thank you for taking the time to leave your honest feedback. Trust me, negitive feedback works fine with me. This is helping me go in the right direction.

Thank You
Tony

MrBone -> RE: doing a make over. Need help with three colors to use (8/5/2006 19:34:16)

Well I am hoping for some positive feedback this time. Well here is what I have so far.

http://www.nicepeoplehere.com/test2.htm

My links are type in a cell. I would like to make the whole cell light up when you put your mouse over it. But how do you do that with Front Page 2003? Can you make a cell in a table a link?

My green background. Is that the right color green I should use with that yellow and orange?

Thank You
Tony

womble -> RE: doing a make over. Need help with three colors to use (8/6/2006 5:15:35)

I like the increased yellow/orange. I'm not sure about the green though. The page is lovely and bright, but that green's kinda too dark and serious for it if you know what I mean.

If you look on a colour wheel, the complimentary colour for that shade of yellow is a quite a bright blue. Same thing if you look at the triads (blue/purple shades). When I tried an analogous scheme though, it came out with a green, but a lighter green (piccie attached) and I think using a lighter green like that would lift the tone of it a lot.

MrBone -> RE: doing a make over. Need help with three colors to use (8/6/2006 8:54:03)

I could not go that light of green. But maybe I should. I did go lighter. Here is what I have. Will this work better, than going with the darker green?

Dark green background

Lighter Green background

Thank You,
Tony

womble -> RE: doing a make over. Need help with three colors to use (8/6/2006 9:46:18)

That lighter green's a little better, but it's still too dark I think.

caz -> RE: doing a make over. Need help with three colors to use (8/6/2006 12:32:08)

This is a colour schemer that I have found very useful,

http://wellstyled.com/tools/colorscheme2/index-en.html

You can see the results on a page mockup and adjust lightness effects on line.

MrBone -> RE: doing a make over. Need help with three colors to use (8/7/2006 0:49:50)

What a weekend!! I was busy on my web site all weekend long.

Well here is what I put together in two days. Again I want to thank Dave, for helping me with the banner.

www.nicepeoplehere.com

Still not sure about the background. By the way, click the Hang Out and check out the phpbb style I put up on there. Almost is the same color. It will work for me anyway.

Now I just need to change that phpbb logo to Nice People Here. But I ran out of time. Now it is time to go to bed and go to work in the morning.

Thanks for all your advise guys!!

Tony

jaybee -> RE: doing a make over. Need help with three colors to use (8/7/2006 13:46:33)

I was about to say the same thing but I'm chicken. [:D]

MrBone -> RE: doing a make over. Need help with three colors to use (8/7/2006 19:50:16)

Sounds like I have it to bright now. I did not want the bright green, but I guess that was the green i have to use with yellow and orange.

What if I did go with a darker green background. Will this help on not being so bright? Link:
http://www.nicepeoplehere.com/index4.html

Or should we go with this kind of background? Link:
http://www.nicepeoplehere.com/index3.html

Thank You
Tony

womble -> RE: doing a make over. Need help with three colors to use (8/7/2006 20:14:57)

Nope, that green's still too dark (looks pretty similar to the earlier dark ones). I think with the yellowy/beige background it looses the bright fun feel and the site kind of gets lost in it.

MrBone -> RE: doing a make over. Need help with three colors to use (8/7/2006 22:40:34)

Womble, I know you are right about the color code for the yellow and orange. It should be that light green color. BUT I do not want it hard on people's eyes.

So I turn it down to a darker green. Maybe it is not the right color, but it takes away from my web site being so BRIGHT.

Thank you for your input.
Tony

jaybee -> RE: doing a make over. Need help with three colors to use (8/8/2006 7:07:05)

try the background as

#ff6600
or #647c1e
or #ffbf00

They all give a different feel and don't knock your socks off in the process.

caz -> RE: doing a make over. Need help with three colors to use (8/8/2006 8:43:40)

How about
body {background-color: #C2CFB5;}
- a toned down version of your button green. Although you will have to adjust "people" in your url line to brighter.

MrBone -> RE: doing a make over. Need help with three colors to use (8/8/2006 23:09:27)

I hate to say this, but I do not know html. Anyway, Can I get you two to put up the colors of those codes? Because I am using Frontpage 2003.

Thank You
Tony

swoosh -> RE: doing a make over. Need help with three colors to use (8/8/2006 23:17:11)

Tony,

You can still get the hex colors with Frontpage.

Format>>Background (as I'm sure you already know)

When you click on the dropdown for the background color choose "more colors"

Then in the upper right hand corner there is a window labled value where you can put in the numbers that jaybee and caz gave you

MrBone -> RE: doing a make over. Need help with three colors to use (8/9/2006 0:36:16)

Thanks swoosh. Got it.

Tony
