Forum software question - 8/6/2006 15:16:54
I will be installing a forum package on one of my client sites. I have no experience with any particular board software, but my question is more generic than software forum specific.

As admin/moderator I understand that I can "ban" any abusive posters by ip address. But if a user keeps changing their ip address is it possible to ban down any further - right to the machine level? If so how would that be done? Or is it a function of the particular forum that you use?

The forum is intended to be family friendly and I want to prevent any problems as they may pop up.

Thanks
womble

I'm using SMF these days, and on that you have a range of ban options (temporary, permanent, full (can't access the forum at all), partial (can see the forum but can't post), ban by hostname, email address, username, and there are a range of IP options, from banning an IP range, a partial IP, or a full IP (but if your user's using an ISP that uses dynamic IPs theirs will keep changing) - this explains the range of ban options available with SMF. phpBB is pretty similar but doesn't have the temporary/permanent thing.

Banning with a full IP address will ban to an individual machine level, but as the SMF manual explains, that's not usually very useful because unless someone's got a static IP address, it'll most likely change on a regular basis, though it may well be within the same range.

Thank you for that info, womble.

Hopefully, I won't end up banning myself for being an idiot.
