"View Source" problem - very strange!! - 8/7/2006 20:36:30
I use Windows XP SP-2. I have come across what is probably the weirdest behavior that I have seen in a computer. I am a part-time web developer. I was asked to add the Babel-Fish language translation service to a couple of pages on a website that I had built earlier. I went to the Babel-Fish site, copied the necessary code, and pasted it into the customer's website. Everything appears to work fine.

Here is the problem. Ever since I copied that code and pasted it into that web page, when I do a view-source of any website anywhere (even this one), on any browser, using any text editor, that piece of code from Babel-Fish appears in the code that I see. It appears whether I view the code by right-clicking and selecting "view source," if I view it by way of the menu, or even if I view it using the Web Developer bar for Firefox. It does not matter what website I choose to view the code from or what browser I choose, that Babel-Fish code shows up in the code that I see. It is obviously not being added to the actual code on the server. It just appears in the code that I see on my computer. When I ftp into a site that I have access to, the piece of code is not there, and rightfully so. Yet, it will appear when I view the code from a browser.

I have gone to the clipboard and made sure it is emptied. In fact, I can copy and paste anything I want without a problem. I have uninstalled and reinstalled my text editor. I have rebooted. I have emptied temporary files and temporary internet files. I have done everything I can think of and still...that code shows up.

Does anyone have any idea where I can go to empty whatever Windows file is holding that piece of code? (I believe it to be a problem with whatever file in Windows that allows website code to be viewed.) For what it's worth, the code was inserted using FrontPage 2000 (which I am phasing out).

Thanks in advance for any input at all.

Sounds like youve covered all earthly possibilities.

It seems to me that there must be a file somewhere within Windows that has to do with viewing source code and that has this bit of code "captured," perhaps similar to a clipboard.

Any ideas where I might find such a file? I tried the Microsoft support knowledge base, but I haven't found this problem listed there yet.

Thanks

Tom

Go to start>search>files or folders. Try searching for "files containing" and paste the string of code in. This might give you a bread crumb.

Take care,

Brian

I tried the search idea. I pasted in one word from the JavaScript and told it to search only for that word in all files, including system files.

Nothing! It didn't even find the word in the two FrontPage files that legitimately include it. I can only assume that it searched the page itself and not the code behind the page.

Any more ideas?

Thanks.

Go to wherever you got the code and hit the Contact Us link and ask them what the flaming heck is going on.

The only thing I could find was that it's now something to do with Yahoo. Make sure you don't have the Yahoo toolbar installed as it may be running through that.

And I assume you have checked Add/Remove programs to make sure it didn't install anything?

It seems that I might be on to something. On another forum I found people who posted with the same problem. In their case, the culprit was Norton, which inserts the mysterious code into the source code only on that computer as part of its ad blocking feature. Symantec's website says to eliminate the problem, just turn off ad-blocking. That didn't help in my case. It was already off.

When I originally pasted in the code from Babel Fish, I unwittingly pasted in the (unnecessary) code that Norton had inserted into the pop-up box. All I needed was the last line of code. The other garbage above it was not needed. Now that I have it on my computer, I am stuck with it for now. I may try to uninstall and reinstall Norton, since the problem just started.

Thanks to everyone for their input.

I think I finally got rid of it. I found another article on Symantec's site suggesting that in addition to turning off ad blocking, I also turn off pop-up blocking. I have them blocked in Firefox anyway, so I did that. The code disappeared as far as I can tell.
