tjpitches -> First Look (8/10/2006 16:08:27)

ok friends -- here's my first draft of the menu in EWD with stu's CSS.

i'm thinking this page will eventually be an "INCLUDE" page ... or a MASTER page???

before i go any further i need some eyes and wisdom.

what say you?

swoosh -> RE: First Look (8/10/2006 16:14:42)

TJ,

Here at work using IE 6.0. As you can see there are some problems

tjpitches -> RE: First Look (8/10/2006 16:18:52)

YUCK!
thanks swoosh.
now to figure out why ...

anyone else?
thank you!

tj

Bill Luebbers -> RE: First Look (8/10/2006 16:48:20)

It looks very good, and works correctly in IE 7 beta 3.

tjpitches -> RE: First Look (8/10/2006 17:48:30)

swoosh --

i THINK i fixed'r ...
any better in IE 6?
thanks.
tj

swoosh -> RE: First Look (8/10/2006 18:33:50)

Negative TJ. Still the same in IE 6

Looks good in FireFox

jaybee -> RE: First Look (8/10/2006 18:56:13)

Which one did you use? The ultimate menu v2?

caz -> RE: First Look (8/10/2006 19:35:39)

It does look like the v2 of the ultimate menu and has a fair number of warnings when validating. Most of them are for unclosed tags, so you need to validate the xhtml first.

jaybee -> RE: First Look (8/10/2006 20:46:13)

Errr good point Carol.

<a href="../menu/form.html" title="Special Needs Adoption">
Special Needs Adoption</a></li>

for example is missing the red bit.

If you're using Stu's code TJ make sure you don't accidentally lose bits.

tjpitches -> RE: First Look (8/11/2006 10:27:03)

caz and jaybee -
yes, it's the ultimate, v2 menu. i really like it and am determined to get it published!

great suggestion, caz, but where's that site that let's me check ???

jaybee, i saw your other post and thanks for your words of encouragement. it reminds me that, while we're all here to help, we're all REALLY basically on our own ...

thanks!

swoosh, still working on fixing IE 6 problems.

does anyone have a solution to checking in IE 6 AND 7? i have IE 7 beta 3, but it wouldn't let me install 6.0 again -- guess you can't have BOTH versions on one system???

swoosh -> RE: First Look (8/11/2006 10:51:41)

TJ,

Seventh posted a site that will allow you to view screenshots of your pages in various broswers and versions plus different resolutions

this site is lots of fun for us newbies ... what a thrill to, one by one, correct the errors they stipulate -- and after each correction, go back and REVALIDATE.
the number of errors is dwindling!!!
thanks. just have to share this beginners' joy.

tjpitches -> RE: First Look (8/11/2006 16:34:29)

Byte-Order Mark found in UTF-8 File. The Unicode Byte-Order Mark (BOM) in UTF-8 encoded files is known to cause problems for some text editors and older browsers. You may want to consider avoiding its use until it is better supported.

so what's THIS mean??

caz -> RE: First Look (8/11/2006 19:19:11)

For help with validating your code I would suggest that you use the Web Developer extension with Firefox ( you really should develop for Firefox and then tweek for everything else [;)]). The HTML Tidy in that will help with your UTF problem and lots of others. As for checking what it looks like in other browsers then lots of people use BrowserCam with a 24hr trial at http://www.browsercam.com. Bear in mind that these are just screenshots.

You can run various standalone versions of IE on your machine, information here, but you may have to register to access this now. You may have better luck with this approach.

Someone else may know what BOM is, cos I don't. [;)]

Avick -> RE: First Look (8/11/2006 20:00:50)

As this is the fist look post.

I have just downloaded EWD and the only thing I can say is WOW.
Its fantastic. Very similar to but nothing like FrontPage if that makes any sense. [8|]

The only problem now is waiting for the official release date.

Hurry up MS…. For goodness sake. [:D]

Caz
Is that the undercarriage of the beautiful Concorde you are standing next to in your profile page???

Its obviously parked at the museum. Don’t think you would have got that close if she was in service! [:D]

Avick -> RE: First Look (8/11/2006 20:03:26)

Sorry about the second post,
After posting the first one on this page I noticed my total posts was 99 and well….. I just couldn’t resist.

That is indeed Alpha Charlie, flagship of the fleet, now based at Manchester Airport. [:D]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byte_Order_Mark

When you've read it, please [&:] explain it.

treetopsranch -> RE: First Look (8/12/2006 23:53:22)

In Netscape your menu(s) open up instead of down and does not render correctly when that happens.

Looks great. It was a sad day when they retired. They will never make an aircraft like that again now that the A380 is coming in to service soon.

tjpitches -> RE: First Look (8/14/2006 13:37:21)

OK - now i'm down to 1 error!

i KNOW i can get this on my own.
tj

tjpitches -> RE: First Look (8/14/2006 18:10:01)

PASSED Validation!
[:)]

tjpitches -> RE: First Look (8/14/2006 18:17:15)

Ok, so now that i've come this far ...

what would you suggest i use this page as ... a CSS? a DWT?
i've got it created but need som guidance on how this page will function ...

thanks as always, for your complete and knowledgeable reply.

treetopsranch -> RE: First Look (8/15/2006 0:20:51)

Your menu still doesn't work in Netscape. In fact it is worse than before.

tjpitches -> RE: First Look (8/15/2006 8:57:14)

Uh, er ... i just stopped dancing in the living room.

lemme check on this.
thanks.
tj

tjpitches -> RE: First Look (8/15/2006 10:46:30)

treetopsranch --

i just downloaded netscape (8.1) and it looks GREAT ...
what version are you using??
tj

swoosh -> RE: First Look (8/15/2006 10:51:09)

TJ,

Have you looked at it in IE 6.0?......still doing the same, I'm using the same page link as above right?

don't mean to ruin the "living room happy dance"

tjpitches -> RE: First Look (8/15/2006 11:05:21)

hey swoosh!
thanks for jumping in.
no - just the 7.0 beta version ...
i've submitted to browsershots.org and am waiting for it now ...
what gives?

i know the code included statements such as "IF IE 6" and "IF IE 7" ... maybe there's something screwed up there.
yesterday was a HUGE acheivement for me, so i think i have enough self confidence to try and tackle this.

thanks swoosh.

swoosh -> RE: First Look (8/15/2006 11:08:59)

Here's what I see
