If you want to start learning the ASP.NET part of EWD (master pages, skins and themes, website security and logins, super easy database access, etc.) I would highly recommend checking out Microsoft’s VWD (Visual Web Developer). It’s an absolutely free download and it’s NOT a beta; it’s the real thing. It's comes with a great help file and tutorials and there's a ton of free third party training. I’ve been using VWD since it first came out in Nov 05 and really enjoy it. It already has many of the features that EWD will have. In fact, much of EWD uses the same “engine” as VWD.

Is there a posting or site which compares EWD and VWD. I am using Frontpage 2003 and I know I need to move on. I have the free download of VWD but have not yet installed it. Before I do, I want to be sure that is the direction I want to go. Are there issues of FP crashing when installing either VWD or EWD? This would be a real problem, since I help manage a web site using FP using my computer. BTW, this site has been a huge help in my web page developement. Thanks to everyone for answering my posts. Dennis

Basically, EWD is really good for design/layout and VWD is really good for creating the back end, but they both crossover. I have both FP 2003 and VWD running together nicely. The EWD beta is another story: I had to but it on a separate computer because it caused problems for FP and other software.

If you're a long-time FP 2003 user like me, I have to warn you that VWD might be a little uncomfortable to use at first. It's similar enough to FP that you expect it to function exactly like FP but different enough it is a little annoying until you get used to it.

Personally, I'm not having any problems with FP while running EWD. That's interesting that you did. Maybe it's the combination of VWD and EWD?

I had the same problem on my office workstation. After installing EWD I was unable to save any htm files with FP 2003, Dreamweaver MX 2004 and EWD. The error I generated communicated that the issue will be addressed in an upcoming bete release. Had to uninstall EWD and then perform a system restore to before EWD was installed.

Now I'm running Office 2003 FP2003. Placing EWD on the machine slowed it down alot. So I removed it and put VWD on which works fine.

Go figure??

I had problems with EWD. I already had FP2003 and VWD on there. I took EWD off but still get a few errors (irritating but not problematic).

Could it just be that we did a custom install and stuck it all in a folder of our choice rather than the default?

Ooh, jaybee may be on to something there. I went the ID-10-T route and did a default install. Maybe I should try installing to a different folder. On teh othe hand, both coexist without issue on my home PC. Dang computers.
