WantToLearn -> EWD and VWD (8/17/2006 11:07:33)

If you want to start learning the ASP.NET part of EWD (master pages, skins and themes, website security and logins, super easy database access, etc.) I would highly recommend checking out Microsoft’s VWD (Visual Web Developer). It’s an absolutely free download and it’s NOT a beta; it’s the real thing. It's comes with a great help file and tutorials and there's a ton of free third party training. I’ve been using VWD since it first came out in Nov 05 and really enjoy it. It already has many of the features that EWD will have. In fact, much of EWD uses the same “engine” as VWD.

From the EWD website:

quote:

“Expression Web Designer draws on site functionality and Web services created in Visual Web Developer, and both products can be used collaboratively between designers laying out pages and developers building back-end functionality. ASP.NET 2.0 code and controls are fully compatible, and the design preview surface within both products is identical so that designers and developers can work on the same solution and build the better end-user experiences.”

P.S. I don’t work for Microsoft or anything like that!

Very nice program now. I downloaded it about a year ago and it was not very good.

Thanks!

Is there a posting or site which compares EWD and VWD. I am using Frontpage 2003 and I know I need to move on. I have the free download of VWD but have not yet installed it. Before I do, I want to be sure that is the direction I want to go. Are there issues of FP crashing when installing either VWD or EWD? This would be a real problem, since I help manage a web site using FP using my computer. BTW, this site has been a huge help in my web page developement. Thanks to everyone for answering my posts. Dennis

Dennis,

Check out this link:

Basically, EWD is really good for design/layout and VWD is really good for creating the back end, but they both crossover. I have both FP 2003 and VWD running together nicely. The EWD beta is another story: I had to but it on a separate computer because it caused problems for FP and other software.

If you're a long-time FP 2003 user like me, I have to warn you that VWD might be a little uncomfortable to use at first. It's similar enough to FP that you expect it to function exactly like FP but different enough it is a little annoying until you get used to it.

Personally, I'm not having any problems with FP while running EWD. That's interesting that you did. Maybe it's the combination of VWD and EWD?

Thanks again.

Me neither. All co-existing fine.

jdanderson02 -> RE: EWD and VWD (8/22/2006 13:35:50)

I had the same problem on my office workstation. After installing EWD I was unable to save any htm files with FP 2003, Dreamweaver MX 2004 and EWD. The error I generated communicated that the issue will be addressed in an upcoming bete release. Had to uninstall EWD and then perform a system restore to before EWD was installed.

WantToLearn -> RE: EWD and VWD (8/22/2006 16:59:07)

Yep, that describes my experience exactly...

mar0364 -> RE: EWD and VWD (8/22/2006 17:11:50)

Now I'm running Office 2003 FP2003. Placing EWD on the machine slowed it down alot. So I removed it and put VWD on which works fine.

Go figure??

yb2 -> RE: EWD and VWD (8/22/2006 19:15:34)

I had problems with EWD. I already had FP2003 and VWD on there. I took EWD off but still get a few errors (irritating but not problematic).

swoosh -> RE: EWD and VWD (8/23/2006 8:31:18)

All co-exist fine here

mar0364 -> RE: EWD and VWD (8/23/2006 9:09:23)

It's becoming very obvious that some people have shall we say a special relationship with Microsoft.

Is it like the movie "Damn Yankees"?????

jaybee -> RE: EWD and VWD (8/23/2006 9:36:59)

[:D]

Could it just be that we did a custom install and stuck it all in a folder of our choice rather than the default?

jdanderson02 -> RE: EWD and VWD (8/23/2006 15:17:25)

Ooh, jaybee may be on to something there. I went the ID-10-T route and did a default install. Maybe I should try installing to a different folder. On teh othe hand, both coexist without issue on my home PC. Dang computers.

janhall_us -> RE: EWD and VWD (8/24/2006 19:32:37)

Does VWD output cleaner code than FP 2003 (please,please,PLEASE [:D])?

Better Standards Support

Visual Web Developer enables you to easily build applications that conform to industry and government standards. The development environment includes new tools for supporting W3C standards such as XHTML and government standards such as accessibility standards.

XHTML Compliant Designer
All HTML code generated by Visual Web Developer is XHTML compliant. For example, all the formatting options available from the toolbar generate HTML which is fully XHTML compliant. All tags generated by the designer are well-formed and properly cased for XHTML.

In addition to XHTML designer support, Visual Web Developer also includes tools for helping you write XHTML compliant code in the source editor. While working in the source editor, you can validate your HTML source code against either the XHTML 1.0 Transitional or XHTML 1.0 Strict standards. When your code doesn't successfully validate, you are provided with an explanation for the validation failure.

Accessibility Checker
Creating accessible Web pages -- Web pages which can be used by persons with disabilities -- is a requirement for many government agencies and large corporations. Visual Web Developer now enables you to easily validate and enforce accessibility standards.

You can use the integrated Visual Web Developer Accessibility Checker (available in Visual Studio Standard Edition and above only) to quickly identify accessibility problems in your application. The Accessibility Checker validates your ASP.NET pages against both the Section 508 and W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) standards, and will automatically output warnings and errors to the IDE Task List.
