Software - "Box not included" - 8/17/2006 21:48:56
I want to purchase Frontpage 2003. I see it for sale on eBay and elsewhere on-line at a significant discount. I'm not talking about the cracked or hacked or whatever versions that sell for next-to-nothing. These "seem" like legitimate versions except they invariably do not include the box or manual. "Sealed CD with Registration code, box or info not included." Will someone please tell me what this means? To be completely above board do I really need to pay $200? I mean, I could live without the box and manual at half that price if it's legitimate. Thanks very much. Dan

Are you aware that Frontpage is being discontinued? Personally, if you prefer MS, I would wait for Expression. http://www.microsoft.com/products/expression/en/default.mspx

Actually I have downloaded Expression and it's over my head at the moment. I'll play around with it a little at a time and see if I can make it work for me. But, my needs are personal and simple and I still use Frontpage 98. I just figured the transition to 2003 would be less of a jolt than Expression. I upload my files with the Web Publishing Wizard, to be honest I'm assuming that's some sort of FTP upload, so even though the extensions are enabled at the server, I'm not using them - for all I know. My site's not critical and I just hammer away the mistakes I run into. But I would like to progress a little. My question was really a general inquiry as to what these "no box included" sales are.

what these "no box included" sales are. Generally, it's purchased unused licenses from OEM's (i.e., Dell, HP) and then they re-sell them at discounted prices.

Thanks. So other than having no manual, the only issue would be it would not qualify for upgrading in the future? That's why I'm looking at the full version. I have Frontpage 98 but it's OEM and, from what I've read, is not eligible for upgrade.

Going from '98 to 2003 is no small step either. 2 *full* products in between. There's only 1 more step to Expression and Ex is free right now which would save enough money for a decent Expressions book as well as a cup of coffee or two. Personally, I think learning Expression would be not much more difficult than the jump to 2003. There are *huge* differences between 98 and 2003. Like to start with there's no Explorer....

I'd still like to know if OEM software is eligible for upgrade or not. But, I've taken your suggestions and have been thrashing about with EWD this weekend with some success and a lot of crashes. I'm thinking that a proven program like 2003 might still be a good solution for someone like me despite the phase-out. Thanks for your help. Dan
