I am looking for some Feedback on our new design for Excellentguide Directory and Article Site

anderskorte -> RE: critique my site (8/18/2006 14:19:18)

It just works, that's all I can say. You have a simple service and you use a simple design to represent it.

It's built with focus on every visual detail (although the title text is Arial —yuck). The color scheme is nice with good use of complementary colors (I think you somehow managed to avoid the typical blue–orange cliché).

I'd recommend using the same text font for all pages. Some of the subpages are in MS Sans Serif while the rest is Tahoma. MS Sans Serif isn't actually considered a good alternative, since it's not scalable but fixed to certain pixel sizes — no antialiasing either.

You're site doesn't validate. If you want it to be technically superior, pick a document type for your HTML and build the website to comply with the chosen doctype.

But all in all, very nice.

My 2 cents:

1. Home page
  • There seems to be a large amount of space between the FIND EASILY and SAVE YOUR TIME sections. And the graphics do not seem to fit the rest of the page.
  • The WEB DIRECTORY box should be lined up with the SEARCH box. And there's also a lot of wasted space between the links.
  • The color scheme is suitable for the content.

2. Home page
  • I think the blue headings should be closer to the blue in the header.
  • There seem to be indents in portions of the page that aren't in other sections of the page.
  • Website is spelled two (2) different ways (website and web site) on the page. Stick with one.
  • Some elements are capitalized in one paragraph, but not in others.
  • The links within your paragraphs are different (font) sizes compared to the rest of the surrounding text. Make it all the same size.
  • Your WEBSITE CREDIBILITY SCORE section/graphics seem to have a top margin of '0' as it sits right up against the paragraph directly above it.

3. FAQ
  • The centered text at the top doesn't work with the rest of the page.
  • The links within your paragraphs are different (font) sizes compared to the rest of the surrounding text. Make it all the same size.
  • Two different font families. One for the numbers and one for the FAQ's. Pick one.
  • Doesn't seem to be finished as there's nothing else on the page...like answers.
  • Left margin seems to be different than other pages.

4. Free Articles
  • Top header/background spreads to both margins unlike the other pages mentioned above.
  • Some of your main headers in this section need some type of padding to distinguish them. Right now they're bumping into each other. And the 'normal-to-bold' hover effect throws the page out-of-whack.
  • LAST ARTICLE headings seem too small for the content below them.
  • ARTICLE TRAFFIC STATISTICS link/page does not sit at the top of the browser like the other pages mentioned above. The page itself also has multiple font sizes.

5. Submit Websites/Articles
  • This page has some of the same attributes listed above. I would consider revisiting it.

6. Privacy Policy
  • This page has some of the same attributes listed above. I would consider revisiting it.

7. Contact Us
  • This page has some of the same attributes listed above. I would consider revisiting it.
  • Address should have caps or no caps.
  • The email address is different than the site.

8. Footer
  • The links all run together. Put some spacing inbetween them to make them stand out more.

Other Things
  • Is it ExcellentGuide, Excellent Guide, or Excellentguide. Pic one and stick with it.
  • Some of the pages have a line just above the footer. Some do not.
  • The links in some of the sections above lead to a page that has a different layout than the other pages. I actually like the layout, yet my issue is with continuity.

Exiting notes:

Continuity seems to be the biggest problem here. And from my own personal experience, lack of continuity with your own branding 'implies' a lack of your professionalism when handling my project - even though you may be the best at what you do. Yet, I wouldn't use this service based on what I've mentioned above. Simple and plain.

I hope you don't take this for more than what it is as it is simply my observation of what I see.

Other than that, if you need help let us know. That's what we're here for.[;)]

Good Lord Seventh! Are you trying for the Booker prize? [:D]

Nah, just had time to kill. And this was how I use to post critiques.

Though I do believe you should venture through the whole site (or as much as possible) in order to really help the requestor.
