More FREE fonts - 8/18/2006 16:35:43
Everyone loves free fonts. Here's a few good choices — for fun and profit.

Criteria:
- They are high-quality (not the typical exhausting freeware junk, we are professionals).
- They provide a good character set.
- You can use them also in commercial work.
- They are 100% free.

Gentium by SIL International. (I use this one in my CV and printed documents)

Lido by Storm Type Foundry. EDIT: easier download here

Fontin by Jos Buivenga.

Yanone Kaffeesatz by Jan Gerner.

Day Roman by Fredrik Nader (Apostrophic Labs).

Fonce Sans by Ryan Ford.

Bodoni FLF [direct link to ZIP file] from Casady & Greene.

ATF Antique and Goudy Sans from “The FontSite”.

Puritan and Bentham by Ben Weiner (Reading Type).

Baskerville Old Face from Elsner+Flake (free via FontShop, scroll down to see).

MgOpen fonts — based on Times, Optima and Helvetica.

Fonts by Peter Saville (especially “New Order 1981”, “New Order Substance” and “Joy Division Closer”).

Fell Types by Igono Martini. For historical mood.

Tip: Use these fonts in text-as-images on your professional website layouts or headings in your Flash files. Or, purchase commercial typefaces from FontShop, MyFonts or some other similar site.

With free fonts you always have to be on your toes because there's a lot of junk that can ruin your design.

Feel free to experiment, though.

You're welcome.

It's a list I originally compiled for myself, but then I thought, why not give it out?

The MgOpen link has changed. The new location is:

http://www.zvr.gr/typo/mgopen/index

(the forum doesn't allow me to edit the initial post, thank you very much)

That's because it's more than 3 months old.

That's because it's more than 3 months old.

More than half of the edits I've needed done have been on posts more than 3 months old. Links get outdated, opinions change, or if a single discussion goes on for months, it's a good policy to include a little summary in the first post.

I don't understand why this kind of feature exists. I'd really love to fix that link in the first post.

Posts get archived so the forum doesn't take up so much space. As I understand it, once they're archived they will display but they can't be changed. There may be other reasons too. Speak to Spooky if you have a problem with it.
